Abstract

A static converter circuit (10), including an inductive or mechanical energy store (11), is connected in series with the electric arc furnace (6). During normal operation of the furnace the static converter operates with slight terminal voltage and peak rectification of the current. At variations in the arc resistance, energy flows to and from the energy store so that, seen from the alternating current circuit, the phase angle of the static converter's impedance deviates only slightly from that of the arc furnace. The regenerative action from the system on the supply AC network will be slight and disturbance of other loads on the network will be reduced.
