Abstract

The process involves (i) addition to a grist, of neutral pH, of an unstable mixt. formed by an anionic dispersion of colophon material with a dry substance content of 15 wt.% and a soln. of aluminium cpd., which consists of alum and/or a polyaluminium cpd. with a dry substance content of 2.5 wt.%, reckoned as Al2O3, and of a cationic dispersion of hydrophobic alkyl ketene dimer, which is added to the grist separately from the mixt.; (ii) forming; and (iii) dehydrating the grist on a wire. Pref. the mixt. is added to the grist near the inlet box before feeding out on to the wire and is produced in direct connection to the addition to the grist. Pref. the cationic ketene dimer dispersion is added to the grist near the inlet box. The grist has a pref. pH within the range 6.2 - 7.5.
