Abstract

At the inspection station (B) the quality of the timber is assessed, and the amount of the top of the piece length to be removed is determined. The overall length, quality judgment details and the top cut length dimensions are fed with other requisite data into a programmed computer. The computer, dependent upon the type of cutting, i.e. free or module, activates a stop (38) in a module withdrawal unit (7) against which the timber piece is moved. A cutting blade (40), stagelessly adjustable, is moved in the opposite direction to the movement of the timber piece to a point where there is a common reference line (D) for the module withdrawal unit (7) and the blade itself , at which the top of the timber piece is severed.
