Abstract
Existing methods of transmitting torque to the shank of a cutting tool give rise to noise and wear esp. under shock loads. To solve these problems the tool shank has a rosette-profile driving collar which engages with a similar rosette-profile machined at the entrance to the bore of the machine spindle nose. The collar on the tool shank consists of two round-cornered squares (4,5) machined one behind the other simply to produce in end view a rosette of eight circular area. These fit with clearance into the similar shaped bore mouth of the spindle and provide a large area of contact for torque transmission. One corner on the tool and in the spindle nose are made to a slightly smaller radius so that the tool will enter at only one angular position. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. suited to modular tooling systems for turning, milling and boring operations on machining centres. REduces noise and wear. Better torque transmission, esp. to small cutters.
