Abstract

The output signals from the sensors (20a, 20b) are fed to a comparator (21) which produces an output signal identifying the surface which has occasioned a looser or tighter signal pattern as the sap or core surface. The signals from the sensors are fed into both inputs of the comparator (21), the comparator is programmed and connected so that at its output it emits a signal indicating which surface in the investigated timber piece is facing the required direction, e.g. upwards. To enact the identification process, a cleanly sawn plank (11) is moved on a transversal transporter between the sensors (20a, 20b). The sensors are transmitters and receivers for visible or infra-red light, sensitive to the difference in the portion of reflected light arising from teh difference in surface structure lines and surrounding wood material reflection properties.
