Abstract

An extracorporeal blood pump comprises a pump chamber 1 with an inlet opening 2 and an outlet opening 3 connected to check valves 4, 5, respectively. The inlet 1 and the outlet 2 are movable relative to each other and are coupled to a drive unit 6 for periodic displacement of the inlet and the outlet alternately towards and away from each other, and the internal volume of the pump chamber 1 is variable according to the distance between the inlet and the outlet. The pump chamber 1 is acted on externally by the atmospheric pressure and has a wall of flexible material so designed that the pump chamber collapses and reduces its internal volume if the internal pressure in the pump chamber falls below the atmospheric pressure by an amount which is greater than the required opening pressure for the check valve connected to the inlet. The reduction in the internal volume of the pump chamber upon such collapse can at least correspond to the maximum increase in the internal volume of the pump chamber when the inlet and the outlet are moved away from each other. <IMAGE>
