Abstract

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for achieving essentially constant tensile stress in a continuous web 2 which is fed by web tension into a machine from a supply roll 1 of web material. The web is led past a brake-generating roller 9, which is coupled to and arranged to rotate at least one electric machine 10 in the direction of feed of the web by means of web tension. The generated electric power is fed to a network via a control unit 20 comprising a first T1 and a second T2 thyristor control. Where the electric machine is constituted by a direct-current machine, the field winding 22 is fed with a field current which is kept constant by means of the first thyristor control. The rotor current rises from zero, when the electric machine starts to rotate, to a certain set current, which is subsequently kept constant by the said second thyristor control, with the result that the torque applied by the electric machine to the brake-generating roller also increases from zero to a certain torque value, which subsequently remains constant for as long as the web rotates by tension the brake-generating roller, independently of the speed of the latter. <IMAGE>
