Abstract

The core of a light water reactor having a plurality of fuel arrangements, of which each has, for its part, a number of fuel rods, is designed in such a way that a fuel rod is provided with at least one intermediate region between fuel regions accommodated in a fuel rod sleeve. The intermediate region contains an extremely reduced component of nuclear material or essentially no fissionable material at all. At least two regions or layers having a high enrichment of fissionable nuclear material are formed by the intermediate regions in the axial direction of the reactor and specifically by means of the complete fuel arrangements of the light water reactor core.
