Abstract

An angle tracking radar system for a guided missile employing a 'strapdown' antenna, i.e. one that is physically locked to the missile body. Accurate guidance of the missile is dependent upon an accurate determination of the sightline and/or sightline rate. This in turn is dependent upon an accurate knowledge of the relation between the target angle and the receiver output signals. The antenna characteristic is derived as a simple function of the direction cosines of the line of sight and constants of the antenna and estimates of these quantities are obtained in a Kalman filter providing sightline and sightline rate estimates.
