Abstract

A microtome 11 comprises an upright frame 12 having a first feed mechanism 13 (rapid feed), 90 (fine feed), for moving the upright frame 12 in a first direction, e.g. horizontally. A carriage 32 is mounted to the frame 12 and movable in a second direction e.g. vertically, transverse to the first direction. A specimen holder 36 is rigidly secured to the carriage 32 so that the specimen holder 36 can be moved in both the first and second directions. <IMAGE>
