Abstract

The line units (1) each comprise at least one protocol-handling processor (3) which interprets the data current communication protocol coming into the respective transmission link (2a) and a buffer memory (4) for the data packet. The node also incorporates a central processor and a selector for transmission of packet-coupled data currents between the different line units. This processor, in connection with a call coming into the coupling node, maintains a packet-coupled connection by working with the protocol-handling processors (3) in the line units. The selector has a circuit-coupled selection network (5,7,12) for data packet transmission between the line units, and a coupling unit (6) working with the line unit processors and the circuit-coupled selector network. The coupling unit, after a packet-coupled connection is established, can connect or disconnect a channel through the circuit-coupled selector network between two different line units for each individual data packet to be transmitted.
