Abstract

In a worm gear with a worm screw (1) and a worm wheel (2), the self-locking is achieved by the worm screw (1) being axially displaceable on a shaft (4). A driver (11) on the shaft (4) is arranged in a rhomboidal recess in a sleeve (5), on which the worm screw (1) is fastened. During driving of the shaft (4), the driver (11) is displaced into a corner of the recess, the sleeve (5) and the worm screw (1) being displaced axially into a central position so that the friction surfaces (6, 8 and 7, 9) run freely thereon and on a fixed machine part (10). When the shaft (4) is not driven, a reaction moment which acts on the worm screw (1) and is caused by a torque of the worm wheel (2) has the effect that a pair of the friction surfaces (6, 8) or (7, 9) comes into contact and brakes the worm screw (1), as a result of which self-locking is achieved. <IMAGE>
