Abstract
A rear axle assembly for a vehicle includes an input shaft 22 connected by a driving shaft to the vehicle engine and an output shaft 24 connected to the vehicle differential ring gear 50. A pair of differently sized input gears 34,36 are splined onto the input shaft. Each of the input gears meshes with a respective output gear 54,52 rotatably supported on the output shaft. A slidable clutch collar 74 selectively clutches one of the output gears to the output shaft for driving the differential ring gear at a predetermined speed ratio. The clutch collar is actuated by a shifter assembly having a clutch fork 78 slidably maintained on a axially-movable shift rod 80 between a pair of opposed springs 86,88. Movement of the shift rod by the operator of the vehicle causes the springs to exert a predetermined bias force against the shift fork. The clutch collar is thereby moved from engagement with one output gear to the other when the friction force between the clutch collar and the one output gear becomes less than the force exerted by the springs on the clutch collar. <IMAGE>
