Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for protecting an outer layer during a layer-coating process, in which a basic layer (3) is applied to articles (5), preferably frame battens for paintings or mirrors, after this outer layer (2) has been arranged on the basic layer (3), the outer layer (2), preferably a bronze, gold or silver layer, being arranged removably on a carrier layer (7). In order to protect the outer layer (2) during mechanical layer application, according to the invention the position of the carrier layer (7) on the outer layer (2) is maintained while the article (5) is being guided through a layer-applying station (16) with layer-applying members (15, 17-20), preferably including a deflecting and/or pressure and/or heat roller (15) and a number of sheathing rollers (17-20), so as to utilise the carrier layer (7) as a protective layer (7a) which prevents the layer-applying members (15, 17-20) from coming into contact with the outer layer (2) while the articles (5) together with the basic, outer and carrier layers (3, 2 and 7) are moving through the layer-applying station (16).
