Abstract
An expansion chamber (12) has front and rear end closures (14, 16), a diffuser (18) extending axially along the chamber from a forward closure aperture (17), with at least one aperture (15) into the chamber. Discharge pipes (24) extend along the chamber and through rear closure apertures (26). - The forward ends of the pipes terminate short of the chamber closure and each has an air inlet tube (22) projecting into it, via an aperture in the closure. There is a gap between the tube and pipe. The formed restricted passage (36), together with that (35) between the pipe and closure, generates a high velocity reduced pressure zone in which the indrawn air is heated, CO in the exhaust gases is exothermally converted to COl, and the reacting gases expanded to leave the pipe at high speed.
