Abstract

This fibre-optic detector of degree of rotation comprises an optical coupler 12 connected to a loop of optical fibre 14. The coupler 12 splits a light beam into beams which are applied to the ends of the loop 14 and it supplies two composite output beams, each of them comprising one beam emerging from one of the ends of the optical fibre combined with a phase-shifted version of the beam from the other end of the loop. The difference between these two composite beams is measured and constitutes an indication of the degree and direction of angular rotation of the loop. <IMAGE>
