Abstract
Quick clay and salt clay soil are stabilised by admixing the clay soil with a soln. contg. hydroxy-Al and K or NH4 chloride, nitrate or sulphate, (pref. KCl) having a concn. at least 4M. The clay deposit is pref. stabilised by forming a number of pillars extending into the deposit by (a) selecting the size of pillars to be formed; (b) determining the wet wt. of the clay in the pillars; and (c) admixing sufficient soln. as above with the clay to form the pillars. Pref., the hydroxy-Al is at least 6M, esp. 6-10M, and has the general formula Al(OH)nX(3-n); where n= at least 2.0, esp. at least 2.5 and X= Cl, Br, I, NO3, SO4 or acetate. At least 5 ml soln. per 100 g wet clay soil wet wt. is used, esp. with the soln. admixed with the soil in situ in the deposit. The soln. mixt. provides effective stabilisation of soil for supporting roads or buildings, with hydroxy-Al causing hardening of the disturbed clay, e.g. shear strength 65kPa after 7 days, and added salt stabilising the adjacent undisturbed clay.
