Abstract

In order to lift a cover 34 or grating from its frame, a wheeled chassis 1 is positioned above the cover 34 or grating with the wheels 2 engaging the roadway 35 surrounding the cover 34 or grating. Lifting keys 10 suspended from a cable 7 are engaged with the cover 34 or grating, and winch 4 mounted on the chassis 1 is driven by an electric motor to wind the cable 7 on to the winch 4 and thereby lift the cover 34 or grating from its frame. The chassis 1 may then be wheeled clear of the frame and the cover 34 or grating may be lowered on to the ground. The chassis 1 comprises a number of easily dismantlable sections 12 to 16 to enable the device to be easily transported. In addition the length and height of the chassis 1 may be adjusted to suit different size covers or gratings. <IMAGE>
