Abstract

For use in a process for the electrodeposition of nickel having a high degree of brightness and smoothness, an acid nickel electroplating bath containing as brightening agent a propargylamine having the general formula: <IMAGE> wherein X and X<1> are hydrogen atoms or variously substituted hydrocarbon radicals or are combined in a cyclic derivative e.g. 4-morpholino. The brightening agent, which may be used in conjunction with an alkanol-based brightening agent, is used in an amount of from 0.005 to 0.5 grams per litre of electrolyte.
