Abstract
A process for the continuous and controlled melting of essentially non-metallic inorganic material, especially oxides, for manufacturing mineral fibres, which uses a sealed vessel with a refractory lining and electrical heating means and contains a liquid bath with a mass of at least 8 tonnes, the melt being continuously withdrawn from this bath at a flow rate of less than half the total mass of the bath per hour and the bath being replenished as a function of the said flow, e.g. at the same flow rate. A carbon-based lining is preferred, with a neutral or reducing atmosphere in the vessel. Bath temperature and melt withdrawal rate are controllable by regulating the prevailing pressure in the vessel, e.g. by way of a butterfly valve in the stack of the vessel.
