Abstract

A method for hardening of trees, especially those attacked by fungus, involves heating of the tree being hardened to a temperature which is sufficient to kill the fungus, followed by exposing the tree to an extract which is inoculated with one or more chosen fungi and which is obtained by boiling leaves in water, in the case of deciduous trees, or needles, in the case of coniferous trees, and possibly bark, preferably from the same species of tree as the one being treated. The selected fungus or the selected fungi are isolated preferably from the same type of tree or wood as the tree being hardened. The method can be used to improve severely fungus- attacked trees that are otherwise not useful for improvement.
