Abstract

A process for treating cellulosic materials and obtaining glucose therefrom comprises treating the cellulosic materials to remove hemicellulose, then dissolving the cellulosic materials in solvent, after which lignin is removed and the cellulose is then precipitated from the remaining solution. The cellulose may be recovered in sheets or in long threads, fibres or as a flocculent material, and is then hydrolyzed to provide glucose by subjecting the cellulose to a cellulase enzyme and may also include subjection to an acid. A yield of glucose may also be obtained by hydrolyzing the cellulose materials that have been dissolved in a solvent and then separating lignin from the glucose.
