Abstract

In a pressurised liquid supply system for a hydrostatic bearing (11, 12, 13) there may be a failure of the supply of liquid to the bearing. To allow the relatively rotating parts of the bearing to come to a halt before the otherwise separated surfaces contact each other, the invention provides a system including an accumulator (28) for storing pressurised liquid and means (29, 30, 34, 36, 37, 38 and 42) for diverting some of the liquid to the accumulator from the supply to the hydrostatic bearing, for maintaining the liquid stored in the accumulator at a pressure greater than the pressure of the liquid supplied to the bearing, and for supplying the liquid in the accumulator to the bearing when the supply of liquid direct to the bearing fails. <IMAGE>
