Abstract

A system and method for storing energy in the form of compressed gas. Two types of compressed air storage systems are known, a constant pressure or a variable pressure reservoir. The former comprises a cavity containing air which is maintained at a constant pressure by water at a higher level than the cavity, as air is withdrawn a corresponding amount of water replaces it. In the latter the air is supplied by a compressor arid maintained between a maximum and minimum storage pressure. In order to increase the constant pressure energy storage system without increasing the depth of the cavity the present invention provides a cavity 8 for receiving compressed gas and a liquid, a compressor, a supply reservoir 22 and a pump 26 for the liquid to maintain the pressure of the gas as a supply of compressed gas is drawn off. Preferably, the liquid pump is a pump- turbine alternatively in another embodiment the liquid is taken from a natural reservoir such as a lake or river 37. The gas may be an inert gas like Helium.
