Abstract

The dialysis cell, intended in particular for haemodialysis, has a rigid housing (10) composed of a two-piece shell (22) having inlet and outlet orifices (14, 16, 18, 20) and two wedge pieces (30, 32). The latter interact with wedge surfaces (62, 64) of the shell and, with this, form a rectangular cavity for receiving a semi-permeable membrane (34). The membrane is folded into a multiplicity of layers which are sealed at the edges against the housing and form between themselves capillary channels (36, 38) for the through-flow of blood and dialysate to various membrane sides. The last membrane layer (46) extends between the wedge surfaces (60, 62) and is sealed against these. On assembly, the folded membrane is clamped in between the wedge pieces and is thus protected against damage. This type of construction makes possible the manufacture of a dialysis cell of small dimensions. <IMAGE>
