Abstract

1489865 Ethers of polyhydroxy methylene HOECHST AG 10 Sept 1976 [12 Sept 1975] 37627/76 Heading C3P Ethers of polyhydroxy methylene are prepared by treating the polymer with an etherifying agent in an aqueous medium. The pendant ether groups preferably contain at least one ionic or ionizable group, e.g. a carboxyl, sulpho, phospho, quaternary ammonium or substituted ammonium group which makes the product suitable for use as an ion exchange resin. In the examples polyhydroxy methylene is etherified with 3 - chloro - 2 - hydroxypropyl - trimethyl ammonium hydrochloride; glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride; 2-chloroethane-sulphonic acid; 2-chloroethyl diethylamine; chloroacetic acid; dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid.
