Abstract
The piston (1), in its piston head (2), has a combustion chamber (3), formed in the shape of a solid of revolution about the piston longitudinal axis, with a maximum diameter (D), which is connected by a neck (4) of smaller diameter (d) to the interior space of the cylinder (5). The ratio (D/d) of the two diameters is less than or at most equal to 1.20. A spout (7) in the neck (4) serves for the injection of the fuel through an injection nozzle (8), which is arranged slanting in the cylinder head (9). The geometric point of impact (10) of the fuel jet (11) lies below the plane (y) and, viewed in the direction of rotation of the combustion air, at an angle ( alpha ) of 60 to 90 DEG downstream of the injection nozzle opening. From there the fuel disperses as a thin film on the combustion chamber wall (6). The combustion chamber wall (6) is in part also spherical below the plane (y) and - measured from the plane (y) - at a depth of approximately 2/3 of half the combustion chamber diameter (D) has a flattened portion (13), all the combustion air thereby being displaced directly into the area of the fuel injection. In this way an improved thermal mixture formation and hence a lower fuel consumption is obtained, together with an improved exhaust gas quality over the entire operating range, especially in idling and in the low and middle load range. <IMAGE>
