Abstract

1495845 Starch adducts with vinyl and acrylic polymers CPC INTERNATIONAL Inc 30 July 1975 [30 July 1974] 31962/75 Headings C3U and C3P Water-soluble or dispersible polymers derived from starch and one or more preformed vinyl and/or acrylic polymers may be prepared by reacting starch in aqueous suspension with one or more water-soluble or water-dispersible vinyl and/or acrylic polymers at a temperature of at least 120‹C. and simultaneously or subsequently drying the resultant polymer. In the examples the starches used are potato starch, carboxymethyl corn starch, and corn starch and the polymers used are polymethacrylic acid and its sodium salt. Other polymers referred to are acrylic resin or acrylic acid/ acrylonitrile copolymer, polyacrylic acid, polymethylacrylate, the ammonium salt of the polymethacrylate containing 45% methacrylic acid, 45% ethylacrylate and 10% butyl acrylate, partly hydrolysed p.v.a. of medium viscosity having a saponification value of 140 and a viscosity of about 25 cp. measured in 4% solution at 20‹ C., fully hydrolysed p.v.a. of saponification value 20 and viscosity 28 cp, and a 55% homopolymer polyvinyl acetate dispersion made with waxy corn starch as a protective colloid.
