Description

A BLANK FOR FORMING A PACKAGE Field of invention The invention relates to a blank for forming a package.
Technical Background When designing a package, it is often desirous to consider a number of different design criteria. The package should e.g. often be designed such that it makes efficient use of the material, is easy to transport to the point of use, is easy to prepare for use, and provide a strong structure. lt is often desirable that it is strong during handling and stable in an erected state. lt is often desirable that the package should be capable of remain in an erected state without the use of any adhesive or stapling. lt is often desirable that the package should have thermal insulating properties such that a temperature inside the package can be kept for a prolonged time even when it differs from the temperature outside the package. Moreover, it is often desirable that the package is easy to carry and allowing the package to be opened and closed to provide access to the interior of the package. The above discussed design criteria are especially relevant for a package designed to be used as a portable cooler. Numerous attempts to address the above design criteria is presented in the prior art. ln US6182465B there is for instance disclosed a two-piece cooler assembly which includes a box insert and an outer shell portion. The outer shell portion is made from a first pre-cut blank that is folded into the final shape The box insert is made from a second pre-cut blank that is folded into the final shape and is inserted into the outer shell portion. The box insert blank is covered with a water and vapor resistant coating to allow the boxassembly to hold water based products for extended periods of time without significant degradation of the two-piece box assembly. ln US2004/031842A there is disclosed a foldable portable cooler with enhanced over-centre locking handle. However, in this prior art document the insulating properties are not discussed as such. ln this prior art design, the focus is on providing corner panels interconnecting a centre panel with end and side panels, wherein the corner panels are configured to be folded into triangular flaps such that the resultant cooler has no proactive leak paths, so that it does not spill or leak water from melting ice. Similar concepts are disclosed in US2012/234715A, US2019047743A. ln US5263339A there is disclosed a portable cooler formed from a blank comprising four side wall panels being arranged one after the other along a first direction, wherein the first and the fourth side wall panels are arranged to be attached to each by the use of a fifth gluing panel being attached to the fourth side wall panel and being configured to be glued to the first side wall panel. One of the side wall panels is connected to a bottom panel which in turn is connected to an inner side wall panel. Said side wall panel and the inner side wall panel are provided with internally facing glue lines used to attach a separate plastic liner in the form of an open-ended box inside the portable cooler. ln EP3348493A1 there is disclosed a container incorporating a Waterproof and insulating sheet having a polygonal geometry intended to be inserted inside the container for covering the inner space thereof and insulating it from the exterior.
Thus, there is still a need for an improved package which adequately addresses one or more of the design criteria that the package should be designed such that it makes efficient use of the material, be easy to transport to the point of use, be easy to prepare for use, provide a strong structure, be strong during handling and stable in an erected state, be capable of remaining in an erected state without the use of any adhesive or stapling, have thermal insulating properties be easy to carry and allow the package to be opened and closed to provide access to the interior of the package.
Summary of invention Thus, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improvement when it comes to addressing the set of design criteria that the package should be designed such that it makes efficient use of the material, be easy to transport to the point of use, be easy to prepare for use, provide a strong structure, be strong during handling and stable in an erected state, be capable of remaining in an erected state without the use ofany adhesive or stapling, have thermal insulating properties be easy to carry and allow the package to be opened and closed to provide access to the interior of the package.
This object has in accordance with a first aspect been achieved by a blank for forming a package, the blank comprising: a floor panel having a longitudinal extension along a longitudinal direction and a transversal extension along a transverse direction, a front wall panel being foldably connected to the floor panel along a first front wall fold line extending in the transverse direction, a back wall panel being foldably connected to the floor panel along a first back wall fold line extending in the transverse direction, two opposing first side wall panels, each being foldably connected to the back wall panel along a second back wall fold line extending in the longitudinal direction, a first top panel being foldably connected to the back wall panel along a top fold line extending in the transverse direction, two opposing second side wall panels, each being foldably connected to the front wall panel along a second front wall fold line extending in the longitudinal direction, two opposing fourth side wall panels being foldably connected to a respective one of two opposing longitudinally extending sides of the first top panel along a respective second top fold line extending in the longitudinal direction, two opposing fifth side wall panels (110a, 110b) being foldably connected to a respective one of two opposing longitudinally extending sides of the floor panel (100) along a respective floor fold line (FL11a, FL11b) extending in the longitudinal direction (L), two sets of additional panels, wherein the respective set of additional panels is foldably connected to a respective first side wall panel on a longitudinally extending side, located opposite to the second back wall fold line of the respective first side wall panel, and two extra panels being oppositely arranged as seen in the transverse direction, wherein each extra panel is positioned transversely outside a respective second side wall panel and longitudinally outside a respective set of additional panels, and wherein each extra panel is removably connected to the respective second side wall panel and/or to the respective set of additional panels.
Since the package may be transported to the point of use in the form of a blank, and especially in the form of a flat-laid blank being in one piece, it addresses the criterium that the package should be easy to transport to the point of use.
The provision of the two extra panels provides means for improved thermal insulation.
Since the extra panels are positioned transversely outside a respective second side wall panel and longitudinally outside a respective set of additional panels, it is possible to make efficient use of the material since it is makes it possible to design the blank such that this area occupied by the extra panels is within a geometrical rectangular outermost perimeter defined by the outermost edges of the other panels anyway being present.
By the two extra panels being connected to the other panels, the blank addresses the criterium that the package should be easy to transport to the point of use. By the two extra panels being removable from the blank it addresses the criterium that the package should be easy to prepare for use and that it should provide thermal insulating properties. By the two extrapanels being removable, they two extra panels may be positioned freely in places where there is needed additional thermal insulating properties. The provision of such two opposing fourth side wall panels improves stability and thermal insulating properties. Each fourth side wall panel may be arranged to be inserted between respective first side wall panel and at least one of the panels of the respective set of additional panels during folding, thereby forming a side wall with at layers of material and thereby providing additional thermal insulation. lt may be noted that the orientation of the various panels and various fold lines which are disclosed as extending along the longitudinal direction and/or along the transverse direction refers to a flat-laid state of the blank. As the blank is folded into a package, the longitudinal direction may in a sense be said to encircle the package by extending along the floor panel, the back wall panel, the top formed of the top panels, and the front wall panel. lt may also be noted that all the panels of the blank have an extension both along the longitudinal direction and along the transversal direction as seen in a flat- laid state of the blank. lt may also be noted that panel names such as top, floor and wall are intended to be read as labels, not necessarily defining the orientation of the panel. As an example, the package does not need to be oriented such that the first top panel actually forms the top of the package. The package may be oriented such that the panel labelled first top panel actually forms a side wall or even forms a bottom of the package. However, in the preferred embodiment, the package will be oriented so that the floor panel faces downward, the top panels faces upward, and the wall panels faces outwards from an axis between top and floor. lt may be noted that the use of first, second, third, fourth, etc. are mainly to be seen as labels facilitating reading and that it does not necessarily mean that there need to be all the intervening numbers of panels or fold lines present. ln the preferred embodiment, the top is formed of a first and a second top panel provided at one side of the blank as seen along the longitudinal direction and a third top panel provided at the other side of theblank as seen along the Iongitudinal direction. However, it is e.g. conceivable that the second top panel is omitted, whereby the third top panel would in strict consecutive numbering become a second top panel. However, to facilitate reading, we have consistently used the numbering first, second, third, fourth, etc., as labels, and in a sense based the numbering on an embodiment including all conceivable panels.
Preferred embodiments appear in the dependent claims and in the description.
The back wall panel, the floor panel and the front wall panel are preferably arranged in consecutive order one after the order along the Iongitudinal direction.
The blank may comprise a second top panel being foldably connected to the first top panel along a first top fold line extending in the transverse direction. The second top panel, the first top panel and the back wall panel may be arranged in consecutive order one after the other along the Iongitudinal direction. The provision of such a second top panel improves stability and thermal insulating properties. The second top panel may also be used to lock the top panels in position by the second top panel being provided with one or more locking tabs extending in the Iongitudinal direction from the transversely extending side being opposite to the fold line between the first and second top panels and the blank also being provided with one or more locking recesses in the back panel, the locking recesses being positioned close to the fold line between the back wall panel and the first top panel and being configured to receive the associated one or more locking tabs of the second top panel.
The blank comprises tvvo opposing fifth side wall panels being foldably connected to a respective one of two opposing longitudinally extending sides of the floor panel along a respective floor fold line extending in the Iongitudinal direction, to further improve stability and thermal insulating properties.
Each fourth side wall panels may be arranged to be inserted between respective first side wall panel and at least one of the panels of the respective set of additional panels during folding, thereby forming a side wall with atleast three layers of material and thereby providing additional thermal insulation.
The blank may comprise a third top panel being foldably connected to the front panel along a third front fold line extending in the transverse direction, to further improve stability and insulation properties.
The floor panel, the front wall panel and the third top panel are preferably arranged in consecutive order one after the other along the longitudinal direction. lt may be noted that the front wall panel and the third top panel may together act to provide an opening into the interior of the package by the third top panel and the front wall panel being folded relative to the floor panel. Alternatively, it may be said that the front wall panel may be folded relative to the floor panel to provide an opening into the interior of the package, whereas the third top panel act as a locking panel aiding in keeping the front wall panel in position when it is desired that the package is kept closed.
The two extra panels initially connected to some of the other panels and forming part of the blank, may be configured to be removed or disconnected from the respective second side wall panel and/or to the respective set of additional panels and wherein at least one of the two extra panels is configured to be positioned as an extra bottom layer and/or an extra top layer of the package. When positioned like that, the extra panel or panels may act as additional thermal insulation.
The blank may further comprise two opposing third side wall panels being foldably connected to a respective one of two opposing longitudinally extending sides of the third top panel along a respective third top fold line extending in the longitudinal direction. The two opposing third side wall panels may be configured to be inserted from above into the slots formed one the respective side between a respective one of the two opposing first side wall panels and a respective one of the fourth side wall panels. Thereby the two opposing third side wall panels will aid in keeping the third top panel in position and thereby aid in keeping the package closed. Each of the two extra panels may be removably connected to the respective second side wall panel, the respective set of additional panels and the respective third side wall panel. With this removable connection to various parts of the blank, the extra panels may be securely kept in place, thereby minimising the risk that the extra panels are accidentally lost by being accidentally completely removed from the blank. I\/loreover, the connection to the various parts of the blank makes it possible to avoid that the extra panels introduces any inwardly facing recesses in the outer perimeter of the blank by which recesses the blank othen/vise could be accidentally caught and damaged.
Each set of additional panels may comprise at least three additional panels being consecutively arranged one after another in the longitudinal direction. The respective set of additional panels may be connected to a respective first side wall panel via any one of the at least three additional panels. lt may be noted that this may as such form an inventive concept without the use of any extra panels. Thus, it may be said that the object of the invention has also been achieved in accordance with a second aspect by a blank for forming a package, the blank comprising: a floor panel having a longitudinal extension along a longitudinal direction and a transversal extension along a transverse direction, a front wall panel being foldably connected to the floor panel along a first front wall fold line extending in the transverse direction, a back wall panel being foldably connected to the floor panel along a first back wall fold line extending in the transverse direction, two opposing first side wall panels, each being foldably connected to the back wall panel along a second back wall fold line extending in the longitudinal direction, a first top panel being foldably connected to the back wall panel along a top fold line extending in the transverse direction, two opposing second side wall panels, each being foldably connected to the front wall panel along a second front wall fold line extending in the longitudinal direction, two sets of additional panels, wherein the respective set of additional panels is foldably connected to a respective first side wall panel on a Iongitudinally extending side, located opposite to the second back wall fold line of the respective first side wall panel, wherein each set of additional panels comprises at least three additional panels being consecutively arranged one after another in the longitudinal direction. The respective set of additional panels may be connected to a respective first side wall panel via any one of the at least three additional panels.
Preferred embodiments applicable to both the first and second aspects are presented below. lt may also be noted that preferred embodiments introduced above in association with the first aspect are equally applicable also to the second aspect.
The respective set of additional panels may include a centre additional panel, and at least tvvo outer additional panels arranged at least one on either side of the centre additional panel as seen in the longitudinal direction, wherein the centre additional panel is foldably connected to a respective first side wall panel on a Iongitudinally extending side, located opposite to the second back wall fold line, of the respective first side wall panel. Each set of additional panels aids in improving stability and the thermal insulation properties of the package.
The blank may be formed of a paper-based, foldable material, so that it is easy to transport to the point of use, easy to prepare for use, and provide a strong structure with insulation properties.
The invention may also in short be said to relate to a blank for forming a package, the blank comprising a floor panel, a front wall panel, a back wall panel, two opposing first side wall panels, a first top panel, two opposing second side wall panels, two sets of additional panels and two extra panels, wherein each extra panel is removably connected to the respective second side wall panel and/or to the respective set of additional panels. The disclosure also relates to a package formed of such a blank, wherein the extra panels have been removed and inserted as additional thermal insulation.

Figure 5 discloses the package of figure 4 in a closed position.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments ln figures 1-3, disclosing the blank 1, the solid lines typically represent cut lines and the dotted lines typically represents fold lines. The cut lines may be lines along which the material is cut completely through, such that the panels are separated along the cut lines. Alternatively, the cut lines may be lines along which the material is cut partly through, to form a perforation lineor the like, such that the panels remain connected but are easily separated along the cut lines. ln figures 1 and 2, there is disclosed a blank 1 for forming a package. The package formed from the blank 1 is shown in figures 3 and The blank 1 a floor panel 100 having a longitudinal extension along a longitudinal direction L and a transversal extension along a transverse direction T.
