Abstract
Description
The longitudinal direction is achieved by heating the plastic in at least one of the longitudinal edges of the web of material before the edges are pressed together with an overlap. Such heating can be achieved by passing one of the edges of the packaging material between two plates arranged at a distance in parallel, where one of the plates is arranged to blow hot air on the edge. During normal operation of a machine for manufacturing packages as above, a web of material is fed through the tube forming means and between the plates, whereby the heating of the longitudinal edge becomes substantially even along the tube. At a short stop for the machine, the feeding of the tube stops, but for practical reasons one of the plates continues to blow out hot air. In order not to risk burning a part of the packaging material, the web of material should not be arranged between the plates during the stoppage. For this reason, the machine is arranged to automatically slide the plates to the side during such a stoppage and back in place when the stoppage ceases.
As mentioned above, fiber-free and low-fiber packaging materials can be relatively unstable and at the longitudinal edges of the material web, a so-called "curling phenomenon" can therefore occur. This means that the material, partly due to built-in stresses in the material and partly due to heat in the manufacturing environment, rolls up. This could cause a problem when positioning the web of material between the plates, and thus a problem when starting the machine after each card stop as above. This is because the distance between the plates is limited and adapted to receive a substantially flat longitudinal edge of the material web. If the packaging material has rolled along the edge, a situation may arise where the plates for a certain period of time push the edge in front of them instead of receiving it between them. In such a case, a good longitudinal seal of the tube will not be obtainable and when the tube is subsequently filled, the filling product will therefore leak into the machine. The machine must then be cleaned before it can be put back into operation, a procedure that can be both cumbersome, time-consuming and thus costly.
OF THE INVENTION An object of the present invention is to provide a device for heating a layer of heat-sealable plastic in a first edge portion of a sheet of packaging material which at least partially eliminates any limitations which may exist in the prior art. The basic concept of the present invention is to provide the plate which provides for the heating of the longitudinal edge of the web of material with a projecting angled flange which is arranged to come into contact with the edge and guide it in a suitable manner before the arrangement of the web of material between the plates.
The device for achieving the above object is defined in the appended claims and discussed below.
A device for heating a layer of heat-sealable plastic in a first edge portion of a sheet of packaging material, which first edge portion is arranged to form, after heating, a sealed, overlapping joint with an opposite second edge portion of the sheet for forming a tube, according to present invention, comprises a heating rail having a heating surface along which the heating rail is arranged to heat the first edge portion, and a counter rail having a counter surface which is arranged to face the first edge portion. The rails are arranged to be positioned opposite each other on an inner side and an outer side, respectively, of the first edge portion during the heating. The device is characterized in that it further comprises a projecting positioning flange which is arranged along the heating rail and arranged to be inserted into the inside of the first edge portion in order to facilitate subsequent positioning of the rails for heating. The positioning flange is inclined in relation to the heating surface of the heating rail so that a material contact surface of the positioning flange slopes away from the opposite surface of the counter rail.
The packaging material may consist only of said layer of heat-sealable plastic or it may be a laminate where said layer is a coating on a backing layer.
The heat-sealable plastic may be any suitable plastic, for example a thermoplastic in a case with a multilayer type packaging material.
The sheet may be included in a web of material to form a portion of the same, and the device may be arranged to heat a first edge portion of this web of material. Such an alternative would be particularly useful in connection with a manufacturing method similar to that initially described.
In the manufacture of packages of the type described above, the overlapping joint corresponds to the sealing in the longitudinal direction of the tube and the function of the rails corresponds to that of the plates.
The inclination of the positioning flange should be greater than 0 degrees and less than 90 degrees. A preferred range for the tilt is between 20 and 30 degrees.
The positioning flange can be arranged along the heating rail in a number of different ways, such as fixedly arranged by welding, soldering, gluing, etc., articulated or formed in one piece with the heating rail.
An advantage of the present invention is that it is useful with many different types of packaging materials, both fiber-free and low-fiber packaging materials, where the flange fulfills an important function by guiding a rolled edge so that the sheet can be taken. between the rails, and high-fiber materials where the flange is not needed and can automatically be idle due to its inclination in relation to the heating surface of the heating rail and a flat edge of the sheet. Thus, the same device can be used in connection with the manufacture of different types of packaging, which can mean an economic advantage.
Another advantage of the invention is that already existing devices can be modified to provide the device according to the invention.
According to an embodiment, the device according to the invention can be designed in such a way that the heating rail is arranged to heat the first edge portion by spreading hot air over it. An advantage of this embodiment is that it enables the heating rail to have contact-free heating of the packaging material.
According to one embodiment, the device is designed so that an edge thickness of the positioning flange at a maximum distance from a transition between the heating surface of the heating rail and the material contact surface of the positioning flange is less than a thickness of the heating rail at the heating surface. In this embodiment, therefore, the "free" edge of the positioning flange which is arranged to be inserted first on the inside of the first edge portion is pointed in relation to the heating rail at the heating surface. This is advantageous because it facilitates insertion of the flange if space is limited.
In the case of the manufacture of packages of a tube of packaging material, for example, the device according to the invention can be arranged shortly after one or more tube-forming means. A pointed flange may then be preferred if the distance between the first and the second edge portion is small.
The device can be designed so that the heating surface of the heating rail and the counter surface of the counter rail are positioned substantially parallel during heating.
This is advantageous because a relatively simple design of the device is thus made possible.
According to a possible embodiment, the device is arranged to move along an arcuate path for the insertion of the positioning boom on the inside of the first edge portion and the positioning of the rails for heating. The advantage of this design is that already existing machines can be modified to obtain the device according to the invention.
The positioning flange can be arranged to be in contact with the packaging material only during the insertion of it on the inside of the first edge portion. This is possible depending on the design of the flange, for example the length and inclination of the flange, as well as the design of the tube. The advantage of this embodiment is that the stresses on the packaging material can be considerably reduced because the flange does not scratch the inside of the packaging material unnecessarily when the tube is fed between the rails. This makes it easier to check the shape of the tube, and scratch marks on the inside of the tube can be further prevented. Another advantage is that no consequential changes of a machine in which the device is positioned are required to compensate for such an effect on the packaging material that could be achieved with a flange which constantly scrapes inside the tube.
The device according to the invention can be designed so that the counter rail comprises at least one opening which is arranged to dissipate heat from a space between the heating rail and the counter rail before positioning the rails for heating. This embodiment entails great advantages in a case where the device is included in a machine for manufacturing packaging similar to that initially described.
As explained earlier, the known machine continues to generate heat, by blowing out hot air, during short stops. Even if the device has been pushed to the side, the heat will affect the packaging material because the displacement distance is not so great for practical reasons. The known counterplate has a solid surface and the heat that is blown out may bounce against the solid surface before it hits the packaging material. This can be a disadvantage because heat increases the "curling phenomenon" for fiber-free and low-fiber packaging materials.
By, as in the device according to the invention, constructing the counter rail with at least one opening, the heat during short stops can be dissipated through the counter rail instead of bouncing against the packaging material and adversely affecting this. The opening in the counter rail can be arranged in a number of different ways, for example as a through hole which opens into the counter surface. Such a design is relatively straightforward.
The features discussed above can of course be combined in the same embodiment.

1a-b and Fig. 3 show a heating rail 10 arranged to heat a packaging material, as will be described in more detail below. The heating takes place along a heating surface 12 of the front of the heating rail 10, which heating surface is provided with a number of evenly distributed openings 14. Hot air is blown out through the openings 14 and hits a packaging material which is arranged along the heating surface. The hot air blowing is done according to techniques that are well known in the field and will therefore not be discussed further.
En utskjutande positioneringsfläns 16 är anordnad längs värmeskenan 10.A projecting positioning flange 16 is arranged along the heating rail 10.
The front of the heating rail 10 and the positioning flange are formed in a single piece by a plate 18 which is bent along a transition line 20 so that the heating surface 12 of the heating rail 10 evenly merges into a material contact surface 22 of the positioning flange 16. The back of the heating rail is formed by another plate 24 which is joined to plate 18 along a weld 26. The advantage of this design is that the packaging material never has to come into contact with a disturbing weld during normal operation, which could be the case with an alternative design. The positioning flange is inclined d = 22-23 degrees relative to the heating surface 12, and it follows from the design according to the invention that a thickness 28 of the positioning flange at an edge 30 is less than a thickness 32 of the heating rail at the spreading surface 12.
Figs. 2a-b and Fig. 3 show a counter-rail 34 which is arranged to face along a counter-surface 36 of the back thereof the packaging material which is heated by means of the heating rail 10. The counter-surface is provided with a number of evenly 7 distributed throughout 38 which during a short stop leads away the hot air which is blown out through the openings 14 in the heating surface 12, which will be explained in more detail below.
The heating rail 10 and the counter rail 34 are arranged to be positioned opposite each other so that the heating surface 12 is substantially parallel to the counter surface 36, and the openings 14 in the heating rail 10 are arranged opposite the holes 38 in the counter rail 34, as illustrated in Fig. 3. During normal operation, the gap 40 formed between the parallel surfaces arranged to receive the packaging material for heating.
The heating rail 10, the positioning flange 16 and the counter rail 34 are included in a device for heating a web 44 of packaging material extending sealing and forming a tube 46, which web and tube are shown in Fig. 4.
The device, designated 42 and shown in Figures 5a and 5b, among others, is in turn included in a roll-fed machine for making packages, which machine is not illustrated herein. The packaging material is of the type described in the introduction, i.e. a laminate of transparent plastic layers where the outermost layers on both an inner side 48 and an outer side 50 of the web of material are of thermoplastic. More specifically, the device is intended for heating the thermoplastic layer on the inside 48 of a first edge portion 52 of the web. In fact, the thermoplastic layer on the outer side 50 of a second edge portion 54 of the web also heats up, but for the sake of clarity this is not described in more detail. After heating, the tube 46 can thus be formed by joining the two edge portions 52 and 54 in an overlapping manner.
During normal operation, the device is arranged at point A in Fig. 4 with the heating rail 10 on the inside and the counter rail 34 on the outside of the partially formed tube 46, as shown in Figs. 6a and 6b. The web of material is fed in a direction B through the device, whereby continuous heating of the edge portion 52 takes place through the hot air which is blown out from the heating rail 10. The greatest heating takes place on the inside of the packaging material since this side faces the heating rail. However, some heating also takes place on the outside because the counter rail 34 directs the hot air around, and to the outside of, the first edge portion. In accordance with well known principles, the web of material is in contact with feed rollers 56 and 58 at the edge portions 52 and 54. However, these rollers and a number of other components shown in the figures as well as certain detailed designs of the device have no direct significance for the invention and will therefore not be described. further. As can be seen from Fig. 6b, the positioning flange 16 is not in contact with the web of material, and thus has no effect on it, during normal operation. 10 15 20 25 30 35 528 8711 8 lSometimes it may be desirable to temporarily stop the operation of the machine for the manufacture of packaging, for example to make adjustments in the machine or replace a roll with packaging material that is running out. During such a so-called short stop, the feeding of the web of material ceases and the device 42 must be pushed aside so as not to burn the packaging material as the heating rail 10 continues to blow out hot air. The displacement to the side of the device is made by a rotational movement about an axis which is sohematically illustrated and denoted by C in Figs. 6b and 7b. Through the rotational movement, the device moves along an arcuate path and assumes a position illustrated in Figs. 7a and 7b. Since there is no longer any packaging material between the heating rail and the counter rail, the heating rail will blow the hot air directly towards the counter rail which diverts it through the holes 38. As shown in Figs. 1-3, the holes 38 are larger than the openings 14 and thus it becomes possible to blow the air straight through the counter rail which makes the heat dissipation effective. In this way, the hot air does not bounce against the packaging material, which is positive from a curling point of view. For the reasons stated above, a certain degree of material curling will nevertheless occur in the edge portions of the web, as shown in Fig. 7b.
When the machine is to be started after a downtime, the device must again be positioned in relation to the web of material as shown in Figs. 6a and 6b.
The displacement of the device to this operating position is effected by a rotational movement which causes the device to move back along the arcuate path. During this movement, the positioning flange 16, as the first component of the device 42, will come into contact with its material contact surface 22 with the material web at the first edge portion 52. Contact will also take place between a rear side 60 of the positioning flange 16 and the packaging material at the second edge portion. 54 because the positioning flange pushes away the second edge portion to make the first edge portion more accessible. With continued movement, the positioning of the device in operating mode will be completed. The positioning flange will thus be inserted on the inside of the first edge portion to thereby guide it and ensure that material curling does not prevent subsequent positioning of the heating rail and the counter rail on each side of the material web. The positioning flange will thus be in contact with the material web during the actual insertion and positioning of the device in relation to the material web. Thereafter, however, it will not be in contact with the material due to its skew and the shape of the tube.
This is advantageous because the positioning flange thus becomes completely imperceptible during normal operation but fulfills its important function during the positioning of the device. 10 15 20 25 30 35 528 871 9 The function of the device according to the invention in connection with a short stop of the machine has been described above. As the name suggests, such a stop is intended to last only for a limited time, and a portion of the longitudinally sealed tube will be filled with the intended product during the short stop.
During a normal stop, however, the tube is emptied of the intended product as such a stop can be for a much longer time. When the machine is put back into operation at a later time, it is run until everything is correct before the tube filling is re-initialized. During a normal stop, the blowing of hot air by the heating rail stops.
Just as with a short stop, however, the device is pushed to the side at a normal stop, which means that the invention fulfills an important function even in connection with a normal stop of the machine.
The above-described embodiment is to be considered as an example only. One skilled in the art will recognize that this embodiment may be modified in a variety of ways without departing from the spirit of the invention.
For example, it would be possible to design the device so that the positioning flange has some contact with the packaging material even during normal operation.
The positioning flange described above has, for example, a certain length and a certain inclination. in fact, there is a connection between its length and skew. If the flange is relatively long, the inclination should be relatively large for the invention to function optimally, and vice versa. In the above embodiment, the positioning boom is formed in a single piece with the front of the heating rail. However, the positioning flange could be individually designed and attached to the heating rail in any suitable way, for example by joints, screws, rivets or welded joints.
The holes in the top rail above are continuous, but they could be designed in any other suitable way. They could, for example, extend to a cavity in the counter rail, which cavity opens to the outside of the plate.
Furthermore, the heating rail and the counter rail do not have to be fixedly arranged in relation to each other. In an alternative embodiment, the rails could be arranged with a variable distance that differs between normal operation and downtime.
Finally, it should be pointed out that the figures are not drawn to scale.
