Polyethylene-insulated, colour-coded cores in a telecommunications cable as described in the parent Specification are provided with a protective transparent polyethylene cover by two methods. Method 1: Each core is coated with a polyethylene dispersion in water (containing additives such as alcohol, thickeners, anti-foaming agents and surface-active agents). The water is then evaporated off and the surface layer heated until it is transparent. Method 2: Each core is coated with paraffin oil or liquid paraffin and a thin layer of powdered polyethylene is applied. This layer is sintered on to the lower polyethylene layer and paraffin to form a homogeneous layer, thus rendering the outer layer transparent.
