Abstract
1,147,169. Oil- and water-repellent compositions. U.C.B. (UNION CHIMIQUE-CHEMISCHE BEDRIJVEN) SOC. ANON. 29 Sept., 1967 [30 Sept., 1966], No. 43758/66. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Division D1] A composition for rendering porous and non- porous materials oil-repellent and water-repellent comprises by weight, 1-50% of a component (A), 0-99% of a component (B) and 0-99% of a component (C), at least one of components (B) and (C) being present, component (A) being selected from homopolymers of fluorinated, ethylenically-unsaturated mixed esters of the general formula R<SP>1</SP>CO 2 -Y-O 2 CR<SP>11</SP> where R<SP>1</SP> CO 2 is the residue of a perfluoroalkanoic acid, R<SP>11</SP>CO 2 is the residue of a polymerizable alkenoic acid, and Y is a bivalent aliphatic, aromatic or aliphatic-aromatic radical, the carbon chain of which may be interrupted by oxygen atoms, and of copolymers of the said fluorinated, ethylenically-unsaturated mixed esters with one another or with copolymerizable monomers selected from alkyl acrylates, alkyl methacrylates, acrylamide and methacrylamide; component (B) being at least one copolymer of 90-99À5% by weight of alkyl acrylates and/or alkyl methacrylates with 10 to 0À5% by weight of an ethylenically-unsaturated compound which contains a reactive group selected from N-methylol, N-alkoxymethyl, aldehyde and epoxy groups; and component (C) being at least one aminoplast resin selected from the polymeric products obtained by reaction of NH 2 group-containing compounds with aldehydes or with aldehydes and alcohols. Baths for impregnating the materials comprise the compositions in solution in an organic solvent or in an aqueous emulsion or dispersion. In the Examples there are used: as component (A): homopolymers of 2,2-dimethyl-propane-1,3-diol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate, ethylene glycol perfluorooctanoate acrylate, ethylene glycol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate, propylene glycol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate, 2-methyl- 2-propyl-propane-1,3-diol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate, 2,2 - diethyl - propane - 1,3 diol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate, diethylene glycol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate, and pentamethylene glycol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate and a copolymer of 2,2-dimethylpropane- 1,3-diol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate and 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diol perfluorobutyrate methacrylate; as component (B): a copolymer of octyl methacrylate and N-methylolacrylamide, a copolymer of 2-ethyl-hexylacrylate and N-methylolacrylamide, a copolymer of butyl acrylate and N-methylolacrylamide and a copolymer of 2-ethyl-hexylmethacrylate andN-methoxymethylacrylamide ; and a component (C): a methylated melamine formaldehyde resin. Zinc nitrate hexahydrate is also incorporated in the baths as catalyst.
