A photographic camera having a socket for receiving flash-cubes and indexing means associated therewith for rotating the socket, is further provided with manually operable means movable from a first position in which indexing of the socket is prevented to a second position in which indexing of the socket is effected by the indexing means. In the embodiment shown, the socket and inserted flash-cube 5 are fixedly attached to a shaft 30 and movable therewith, the shaft 30 also carrying a segment 31 of a clutch mechanism. The other clutch segment 32 is slidable on a shaft 33, but rotates therewith, and bears against a manually operable lever 34 which, in its first position, maintains the segment 32 out of engagement with the segment 31. Rotation of the shaft 33 in response to film winding mechanism is therefore not transmitted to the shaft 30, so the socket is not indexed. However, a switch 39, controlled by the lever 34, is open, so a circuit to a flash-bulb of the inserted flash-cube is not completed. When it is desired to make a flash exposure, the lever 34 is rotated anti-clockwise (as seen) to a second position thereby closing the switch 39 and causing the segments 31, 32 to engage. Depression of the shutter release then results in a flash exposure, the flash-cube being indexed as the film is advanced, the relationship between the film advancing mechanism and the indexing mechanism being as described in Specification 1,154,171. In the embodiments of Figs.2, 3 (not shown) a sprocket wheel (9, 9<SP>1</SP>) is advanced through 90 degrees by a slip clutch mechanism as described in Specification 1,154,171. The manually operable means comprises a lever (11, 11<SP>1</SP>) which in its first position engages one of a series of projections (10) on the sprocket wheel and, on being pivoted to its second position, releases the projection and closes a switch (13, 23) in the flash-bulb circuit. In another embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown) a second shutter release button (42) is provided for use when making a flash exposure. Depression of this button not only actuates the shutter, but also closes a normally open switch (44) in the flashbulb circuit and pivots a lever (46) out of engagement with a slip clutch (48) to allow of indexing. In a further embodiment Fig. 6 (not shown), a second shutter release button (51) is again provided to actuate the shutter and close the flashbulb circuit which also contains an electromagnet. On depression of the button (51) current passes through the winding of the electromagnet and attracts a hooked lever (57) out of engagement with a sprocket wheel (58) which rotates under spring action to index the flash-cube during exposure.
