In an ice cream freezer having a mix supply container 1 and a freezing compartment 9, heating elements 3 and 15 are provided to sterilize the contents prior to cooling and freezing by refrigeration ducts 4 and 14. The freezing compartment has a stirrer 12 and scrapers 13 and is fed with compressed air from a compressor 21 through a system which includes check valves 22 and 30, fillers 23 and 28, a reservoir 25 and a pressure controller 26. The supply container includes a mixer 2, has a sealed cover 19, and has a connection 6 through which water or a disinfectant may be introduced to flow through the apparatus to the dispensing tap 11. The connection 6 and the tap 11 may be so thermally insulated that they are brought to sterilization temperature under the action of the heaters 3 and 15. Thermostats 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP>, 5<SP>111</SP> 16<SP>1</SP> and 1611 are provided to control the sterilizing and cooling functions of the apparatus. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the dispensing tap is operated from the compressed air system, and a thermostatically or manually operated valve is included in the connection between the supply container and the freezing compartment. In another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a freezing compartment is served by two alternately operable supply containers, one of which is used to prepare and sterilize mix while the other is supplying the freezing compartment. The freezing compartment stirrer and the mixer in the supply containers are independently driven.
