Abstract

1,182,993. Centrifugal pumps. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Feb. 13, 1968 [Feb. 15, 1967], No.7121/68. Heading F1C. A self-priming centrifugal pump comprises a rotatable pump body, a suction pipe dipping into the liquid to be conveyed and communicating with a chamber in the pump body, the pump body including a level-defining edge for forming, under the influence of centrifugal force, a liquid ring of generally constant level in the chamber, a channel in the pump body for discharging from the pump the liquid in the liquid ring, an auxiliary channel in the pump body in communication with atmosphere for discharging excess liquid overflowing the leveldefining edge, and an impeller on the pump body having vent channels communicating with atmosphere and with the chamber and arranged so that during initial rotation of the pump body any gases in the chamber are expelled, causing the pump to be primed. In the lubricant pump shown in Fig. 1, lubricating oil 6 is drawn through a pipe 7 into a chamber 5 within a hollow rotary body 1 where it forms a liquid ring 8 from which the oil is directed through channels 9 on to a ball bearing 3. Radial blades may be provided in the chamber 5 to assist the rotation of the liquid ring. The liquid ring extends radially inwardly as far as an edge 10; excess oil overflows the edge and is discharged through auxiliary channels 11 which may impel it against a cooled wall or a cooler. The pump is primed by a suction pump comprising an impeller 12 having channels 13 through which gases collecting in the chamber 5 are withdrawn and expelled to the atmosphere. To ensure that the bearing 3 is lubricated even at low pump speeds, a slinger ring 16 dipping into the oil sump splashes oil on to a casing 4 so that it flows through a channel 17 to the bearing. At high speed, this oil flow ceases because the oil is displaced by air carried along by the impeller 12. Foreign particles in the oil are trapped in the annular enlargement of the chamber 5 lying radially outward of the inlet openings of the channels 9 and can be removed when the pump is stationary. The pump may be disposed vertically with the end 15 of the hollow body 1 extended to form the inlet pipe. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the outer surface of the hollow body (1) has a cylindrical position journalled in a plain bearing, the channels (9) being disposed radially so as to discharge through the cylindrical portion directly on to the bearing surface.
