Abstract
1,089,839. Electron beam apparatus. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 10, 1965 [Feb. 10, 1964], No. 5881/65. Heading H1D. A travelling web is subjected to electron beam bombardment by passing the web 10 over a smooth sealing lip 30 containing an aperture 29 for the electron beam, a vacuum seal being made between the web and the lip by providing further apertures 31 adjacent the electron beam aperture and applying a partial vacuum through the further apertures. The treatment aperture extends transverse to the web. The web is urged into contact with the outer surface 13 of member 14 by the pressure of a profiled surface of member 17, a recess 37 in member 17 being connected to a vacuum source, the partial vacua created in apertures 31 and recess 37 being used to control the vacuum seal between the web and the lip. The web is capstan driven and is tensioned.
