Abstract

1,017,122. Moulding and filling closed containers. H. PECHTHOLD. Oct. 23, 1962 [Oct. 25, 1961], No. 40009/62. Heading B5A. A container is blow-moulded and filled with a flowable material simultaneously by introducing the flowable material, under pressure, into a hollow body of thermoplastic material and allowing the enclosed air to escape against a back pressure so that the hollow body is expanded to the shape of a mould and is then closed. As described, a tube 6 of thermoplastic material (Fig. 1) is extruded about a core 1 and passes between mould havles 24, 25 which are closed about the tube. The flowable material is then introduced through bore 7 while the air inside the tube escapes along vent 22 against a back pressure caused by a throttle valve 21. The flowable material is fed under pressure from a pressure vessel 10 which has a source of pressure 13 (e.g. compressed air), the pressure vessel 10 being supplied from a reservoir 15 by a pump 14. When the container is fully expanded and is filled, the excess flowable material may return to the reservoir via the vent 22 and conduit 20. The tube 6 is then severed and mould parts 28 are moved away (Fig. 1d) to allow the neck to be sealed by jaws 31. Alternatively, the mould parts 28 may produce a screw-thread on the neck of the container which can then be closed by a screw cap (not shown). In a second embodiment the flowable material is introduced at the bottom of the container as shown in Fig. 2a. In a further embodiment, the tube may be closed at both ends (Fig. 4a) and the inlet and outlet vents are formed by hollow needles 35, 36. In each of these embodiments the outlet vent 22 may be connected to a source of compressed air (not shown) to provide the back pressure and also to increase the pressure of the air in tube 6 prior to the introduction of the flowable material.
