Abstract
1,182,951. Pulp moulding. DIAMOND INTERNATIONAL CORP. 19 June, 1967 [4 Jan., 1967], No. 28200/67. Heading B5A. A pulp moulding apparatus comprises a first rotary support for the suction dies and a second rotary support for the transfer and pressure dies. The wheel 14, Fig. 1, carries rows of radially disposed suction dies 22 each row of which has an associated orienting arm carrying a cam follower 26 which rides a cam track 28. The dies are immersed row-by-row in slurry 32 in a tank 30 to receive a pulp deposit preform which is removed by the finishing assembly 16 comprising a plurality of transfer-pressing and finishing dies 34 each having a support shaft 38, Fig. 2, from which support members 40, 42 depend. A manifold assembly 54 to which vacuum and/or air is supplied, is periodically moved radially with respect to the shaft 38 by a motor driven crank and connecting rod drive 44, 46, 48 and carries a pressing die 72 which is urged outwardly by springs 74 and the operative face of which is connected to the manifold 54. Each die 72 includes a resistance heater plate 82. Each transfer die 108 is carried by a carrier 96 periodically rotatable through 180 degrees between a position in which the die co-operates with and removes a preform from a moulding die 22 (station 22<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1) to a position in which it co-operates with a pressing die 72 (station 34<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1). Each transfer die 108 has a thermostatically controlled heater plate 112, Fig. 2, which with the heater plate 82 serves to remove steam and water vapour from articles being finished. The carrier 96 is rotated after station 34<SP>11</SP> and the finished articles F, Fig. 1, are blown on to the conveyer 18. In a modification, Fig. 11, the finishing assembly 200 comprises a plurality of compound dies 234, having die halves 308 which cooperate with moulding dies 22<SP>1</SP> and pressing dies 272. Each die 234 is moved under a hood 4 having spraying nozzles at stations A and B for waxes or dyes and heating means L.
