Abstract
986,784. Valves. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Oct. 3, 1963 [Oct. 24, 1962], No. 38930/63. Heading F2V. The inner and outer chambers of a tubeless tyre are connected to the outlets 14, 13, Fig. 2, respectively, of a valve body 11 housing a valve core 28 and a further closure comprising an "O" ring 35 disposed between flanges 34 on a stem 33, which ring co-operates with an opening 36 leading to the outlet 14. The body 11 has a flange 15 whereby it is attached to the rim, a rubber washer 41, Fig. 3, being interposed between the rim 3 and nut 43. When inflating air enters a chamber 24, Fig. 2, in the body 11 it flows directly to the outer chamber via a port 31 and the outlet 13; concomitantly it opens valve 35 and enters the inner chamber until the pressure therein closes the latter. Pressure in the outer chamber is measured in the normal way but the pressure in the inner chamber cannot be measured until the valve core 28 is removed; in this case the gauge needs a long actuating-pin. Outlet 14 has a larger flow area that outlet 13 so that the inner chamber is inflated to a higher pressure than the outer one. Both chambers are deflated by removing the inner body member 20. In a modification, the washer 41, Fig. 3, is provided with a metal reinforcing-band 44 and the valve 50 for the inner chamber consists of a stem 47 with a seal 51 co-operating with a seat 52, the stem 47 being connected to the pin 37 of the valve core 28 by a spring 54; a light spring 53 is disposed around the stem 47. A relief valve 40 is disposed between the chambers to ensure that the desired pressure in the inner is not exceeded. In another modification, the valve 64, Fig. 4, for the inner chamber has a valve core 64 engaging a tapered body part 63 and is of similar construction to the core 28 but the loading spring is lighter so that the valve will open due to air pressure downstream of core 28. The inner housing is in two parts 65, 66 to permit installation of core 64; the parts 65, 66 may either be joined by threading and bonding or by swaging or press-fitting. A heavy spring may hold the core on to the part 63 whereby the latter also acts as a relief valve when the pressure in the inner chamber exceeds the desired value. The heavy spring may seat on the core 28 or a shoulder in the body and the tapered part may be replaced by a flange. The housing parts 65, 66 may be joined by a bellows spring, one formed with grinding flanges the main housing part also acting as the relief valve. A metering opening may be disposed in the body between the two inflation valves. Sealing means e.g. 55, 57 are provided between the inner and main body portions.
