Description

TECHNICAL FIELD The invention relates to a milk cooling tank including a spray nozzle, which is installed for spraying a cleaning liquid in an interior of the milk cooling tank. The milk cooling tank further comprises a manhole forming an opening in a wall of the milk cooling tank. The manhole comprises a manhole frame and a manhole cover. The manhole frame is surrounding the opening and forming an annular seat for the manhole cover, which annular seat is facing the interior of the milk cooling tank. The manhole cover is configured, in a closed state of the manhole cover, to seal against the annular seat facing the interior of the milk cooling tank.
BACKGROUND The milk cooling tank described above may be provided on a dairy farm. These milk cooling tanks are designed to maintain a low temperature and high quality on the stored milk until the milk cooling tank is emptied by a milk truck. The empty milk cooling tank is thereafter cleaned by a cleaning-in-place (CIP) system before new milk is collected in the milk cooling tank. This CIP system has a spray nozzle, which is installed for spraying rinsing water and cleaning solution containing a mixture of water and cleaning agent onto the internal surfaces of the milk cooling tank. EP0857091 discloses such a system.
From a food safety and hygiene point of view it is essential that all internal surfaces of the milk cooling tank are thoroughly rinsed and cleaned by the rinsing water and cleaning solution from the spray nozzle. The spray nozzle is typically installed at an upper and central portion of the milk cooling tank. US2895688 and US3104672 discloses milk tanks provided with different kinds of spray nozzles for cleaning the interior of the milk tank.
There are two basic types of milk cooling tanks - vertical or horizontal - wherein the vertical silo tank normally has a relatively larger tank volume, such as volumes of up to approximately 40 000 litres of milk. The vertical silo tank may be arranged on larger dairy farms. The vertical silo tank can however be problematic to spray clean. The vertical silo tank is usually also provided with a spray nozzle at an upper central portion and a service manhole in a lower portion of the vertical silo tank. The manhole is thereby configured to be situated below the milk level in the silo tank. lt can be problematic with this configuration to adequately clean all internal surfaces of the vertical silo tank since the manhole cover in the lower portion is provided at a relatively large distance from the spray nozzle. lt may thereby be particularly difficult to spray clean a specific inner surface portion, which is concealed from the spray if the manhole cover is furthermore provided with an inner concave surface configured to withstand a hydrostatic pressure of the milk inside the milk cooling tank. US4192332 relates to this problem and proposes a solution of basically locating the spray nozzle at a lower portion thereof.
SUMMARY lt is an object of the invention to provide an improved milk cooling tank in view of its cooling capabilities, while facilitating a cleaning of the internal surfaces inside the milk cooling tank. This object is achieved by the milk cooling tank of claim 1.
Thus, the initially defined milk cooling tank is hereby characterized in that the manhole cover comprises an inner cover plate and an outer cover plate, which together enclose an intermediate space containing an insulating material interposed between the inner cover plate and the outer cover plate, the inner cover plate having an internal surface, which in the closed state of the manhole cover is facing the interior of the milk cooling tank, wherein the internal surface of the inner cover plate is extending in a flat or convex manner within the interior of milk cooling tank. Although the internal surface of the inner cover plate is hereby preferably flat, it may alternatively exhibit a slight convex extension towards the interior of the milk cooling tank. ln this way the manhole cover is provided with an insulating material, which minimizes any heat transfer to the cool milk inside the milk cooling tank, while the inner cover plate with its internal surface of the manhole cover is extending in such a way that it is easily reached by the spray nozzle of the milk cooling tank. The internal surface of the manhole cover is thereby extending in said flat or convex manner (i.e., a non-concave manner) to ensure that the spray from the spray nozzle thoroughly rinses and cleans the entire internal surface of the manhole cover. ln addition, the insulating material interposed between the inner cover plate and the outer cover plate of the manhole cover improves its ability to resist the hydrostatic pressure of the milk inside the milk cooling tank. Hence, the manhole cover - when for instance provided in a lower portion of the milk cooling tank - does not require an inner concave surface configured to withstand the hydrostatic pressure of the milk column. ln an embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the manhole cover comprises an annular groove accommodating an annular gasket, wherein the annular groove is formed at an outer circumference of the manhole cover, wherein the annular gasket is arranged to seal against the annular seat of the manhole frame in the closed state of the manhole cover. ln this way the annular gasket is easily replaceable and arranged to efficiently seal against the seat of the manhole frame. ln a further embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the annular groove for the annular gasket is formed between an outwardly bent circumference of the inner cover plate and an outer circumference of the outer cover plate. ln other words, the outwardly bent circumference is, in the closed state of the manhole cover, extending in a direction towards the exterior of the milk cooling tank. The inner cover plate of the manhole cover may thereby by formed of stainless steel and pressed in one-piece without rough unhygienic inner surfaces, comprising for instance welding joints that may be difficult to clean. The embodiment also provides a well-protected annular groove for the annular gasket. ln an embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the outer circumference of the outer cover plate includes an outermost edge, which is welded to the inner cover plate. ln other words, the outer cover plate is welded to the inner cover plate on the exterior side so that the manhole cover does not exhibit such a welding on the inner surface facing the interior of the milk cooling tank. ln a further embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the inner cover plate has a flat extension between its outwardly bent circumference, whereby the internal surface of the inner cover plate is extending in a flat manner between its outwardly bent circumference. The production of the manhole cover can in this way be facilitated, while the spray cleaning of the flat internal surface is improved. The internal surface between the outwardly bent circumference is not subjected to any bending and/or pressing step in the manufacturing of the inner cover plate. This is beneficial as the entire inner surface - typically made of stainless steel- which is exposed to the milk inside the tank is polished to a sanitary or food grade surface finish, while at the same time the flat surface ensures that the internal surface is completely reached and thoroughly rinsed by the spray nozzle. ln an embodiment of the milk cooling tank, an internal surface of the outer cover plate is extending in a concave manner to form the intermediate space containing the insulating material between the inner cover plate and the outer cover plate. The internal surface of the concave outer cover plate thereby forms a suitable concave shape for containing the insulating material, while the concave outer cover plate together with the insulating material provide enhanced support to the (flat) inner cover plate. This enables a reduced thickness on the outer cover plate and inner cover plate even if the latter is subjected to a relatively high hydrostatic pressure from the milk inside the milk cooling tank. ln further embodiments of the milk cooling tank, the insulating material is a polymeric foam, preferably polyurethane foam. The polymeric foam and preferably polyurethane foam thereby provide excellent insulation and load-bearing properties for the manhole cover. ln a further embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the spray nozzle is installed in an upper portion of the milk cooling tank, preferably in a central upper portion of the milk cooling tank. The manhole cover according to the present invention is particularly suited for the type of milk cooling tank having the spray nozzle located in the upper (central) portion of the milk cooling tank. ln an embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the spray nozzle is a rotary spray nozzle, such as a T-sprayer. ln an embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the manhole is arranged in a side wall in a lower portion of the milk cooling tank. ln an embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the milk cooling tank is a vertical silo tank comprising a cylindrical side wall. ln an embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the cylindrical side wall of the vertical silo tank comprises an inner shell and an outer shell enclosing an insulating material, which preferably comprises polymeric foam and exhibits a thickness of at least 50 mm inside the cylindrical side wall. ln an embodiment of the milk cooling tank, the vertical silo tank has a tank size configured to contain at least 10 000 litres of milk, and preferably in a range of 20 000 litres to 42 000 litres of milk. The milk cooling tank of the embodiment may exhibit an external diameter on the cylindrical side wall of the vertical silo tank in a range of 2 - 4 meters, such as 3 meters, and an external height of the vertical silo tank may be in a range of 2 - 8 meters, and preferably at least 4 meters in height.
FIGURES Fig. 1 shows a milk cooling tank comprising a manhole according to the invention, Fig. 2 shows an enlarged cross-sectional view of the encircled manhole in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows a cross-sectional view of the encircled portion of the manhole in Fig. 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION Fig. 1 depicts a milk cooling tank according to an embodiment of the invention. The milk cooling tank comprises a spray nozzle 2, which is arranged for spraying a cleaning liquid in an interior 3 of the milk cooling tank 1. As can be seen in Fig. 1, the spray nozzle 2 is installed centrally in an upper portion 1U of the milk cooling tank 1. ln the embodiment shown, the spray nozzle 2 is a rotary spray nozzle in the form of a T-sprayer.
The milk cooling tank 1 is further provided with a manhole 4 forming a service opening in a side wall 5 of the milk cooling tank. The manhole 4, as can be seen in Fig. 1, is arranged in the side wall 5 in a lower portion 1L of the milk cooling tank. Furthermore, the milk cooling tank 1 in the embodiment is a vertical silo tank 1 having a cylindrical side wall 5 and a tank size configured to contain approximately 40 000 litres of milk. An external diameter D of the cylindrical side wall 5 on the shown vertical silo tank 1 is hereby 3 meters and an external height H of the vertical silo tank 1 is approximately 7 meters. Hence, there may be a significant distance provided between the rotary spray nozzle 2 installed in the central upper portion 1U and the manhole 4 installed in the lower portion 1L. The path of the water spray, which is schematically shown by a dotted line in Fig. 1, is relatively long between the rotary spray nozzle 2 and the manhole 4. lf the manhole cover in the lower portion is provided with an inner concave surface, as described previously in connection with prior art, it can be problematic to adequately clean the internal surface of the manhole cover. The manhole 4 of the present invention is designed to mitigate this problem.
Fig. 2 is hereby depicting an enlarged cross-sectional view of the encircled manhole 4 in Fig. 1. The shown manhole 4 includes a manhole frame 6 and a manhole cover 7, wherein the manhole frame 6 is surrounding the opening in the side wall 5 and forming an annular seat 8 for the manhole cover 7 (see also Fig. 3). As can be further seen in Fig. 2, the cylindrical side wall 5 of the vertical silo tank 1 comprises an inner shell 5a and an outer shell 5b enclosing an insulating material 5c of polyurethane foam at a thickness of approximately 50 mm inside the cylindrical side wall 5.
Fig. 3 is showing a cross-sectional view of the encircled portion of the manhole in Fig. 2. The shown annular seat 8 is facing the interior 3 of the milk cooling tank 1, and the manhole cover 7 is configured, in a closed state, to sea| against the annular seat 8. As also shown in Fig. 2, the manhole cover 7 comprises an inner cover plate 9 and an outer cover plate 10, which together enclose an intermediate space 11 containing an insulating material 12 interposed between the inner cover plate 9 and the outer cover plate 10. The inner cover plate 9 hereby comprises an internal surface 9a, which in the closed state of the manhole cover 7 is facing the interior 3 of the milk cooling tank 1. ln the shown embodiment, the internal surface 9a of the inner cover plate 9 is extending in a flat manner within the interior 3 of milk cooling tank. ln this way the inner cover plate 9 with its flat internal surface is extending in such a way that it is easily reached by the spray nozzle 2 of the milk cooling tank 1. ln other words, the internal surface 9a of the manhole cover 7 is extending in a non- concave manner to ensure that the spray (see dotted line in Figs. 2 and 3) from the spray nozzle 2 thoroughly rinses and cleans the internal surface 9a of the manhole cover 7. The internal surface 9a of the manhole cover 7 could in an alternative embodiment extend in a slightly convex manner. Thus, a slight curvature inward may also ensure that the spray (see again the dotted line in Figs. 2 and 3) from the spray nozzle 2 thoroughly rinses and cleans the slightly convex internal surface 9a of the manhole cover 7.
Moreover, the shown insulating material 12 interposed between the inner cover plate 9 and the outer cover plate 10 improves the manhole cover's ability to carry the load of the hydrostatic pressure from the milk inside the milk cooling tank. Thus, the manhole cover 7 - when provided in the lower portion 1L of the vertical silo tank 1 - is able to withstand the hydrostatic pressure of a relatively high milk column inside the vertical silo tank 1. The insulating material 12 furthermore increases the heat insulation properties of the manhole 7 cover. The insulating material 12 is a polymeric foam in the form of polyurethane foam in this embodiment.
As can be seen in Fig. 3, the manhole cover 7 comprises an annular groove 13 for accommodating an annular gasket 13a. The annular groove 13 is formed in an outer circumference 14 of the manhole cover 7 and the annular gasket 13a is arranged to sea| against the annular seat 8 of the manhole frame 6 in the closed state of the manhole cover 7.
The annular groove 13 for the annular gasket 13a is formed between an outwardly bent circumference 9b of the inner cover plate 9 and an outer circumference 10b of the outer cover plate 10. The outer circumference 10b of the outer cover plate 10 hereby has an outer most edge 10c being welded to the inner cover plate 9. The inner cover plate 9 has a flat extension between its outwardly bent circumference 9b, so that the internal surface 9a of the inner cover plate 10 is extending in a flat manner between its outwardly bent circumference 9b. Furthermore, as also depicted in Fig. 2, an internal surface 10a of the outer cover plate 10 is extending in a concave manner to form the intermediate space 11 containing the insulating material 12 between the inner cover plate 10 and the outer cover plate 11.
The embodiment of the invention described above is to be used as illustration only and should not be used in a limiting sense to interpret the scope of the invention. Modifications to the embodiment, set forth above, could be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the present invention, as defined by the claims.
