Description
A cover device, a sensor arrangement comprising such a cover device and a vehicle comprising such a cover device TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a cover device for at least one sensor devicearranged in an aperture in an outer panel of a vehicle. The invention also relatesto a sensor arrangement for a vehicle comprising such a cover device. The invention further relates to a vehicle comprising such a cover device.
BACKGROUND Today, vehicles often comprise sensors to detect the vehicle surroundings forapplications such as adaptive cruise control and parking assistance. Sensorsmay also be part of different safety systems, such as lane departure warningsystems, vulnerable road user detection or blind spot information systems etc.To avoid accidents, it is likely that these sorts of safety systems will become alegal requirement in the future, especially for autonomously driven vehicles. Fordetecting and monitoring the surroundings, vicinity information detectionsensors are typically used. These sensors may comprise a LIDAR sensor, aradar sensor, an ultrasound sensor and/or an optical camera. Vicinityinformation detection sensors are often mounted in the front area of the vehicle. To protect the sensors from damage and dirt, a casing or cover may shield the SGFISOFS.
Vehicles are typically designed streamlined in the overall shape to reduce drag. The majority of air resistance on a vehicle can be localized to certain zones, such as the front area of the vehicle. l\/lounting of a sensor in the front area maythus negatively affect the streamlined design of the vehicle. Vehicleaerodynamics is of major importance in improving vehicle fuel efficiency. Drag,or air resistance, can be described as the retarding force acting on a bodymoving through a fluid (i.e. air) parallel and opposite to the direction of motion.
Drag increases with velocity - the faster the object travels, the more drag itexperiences. Optimization of airflow around a vehicle can reduce the vehicle"sdrag and thereby increase a vehicle"s fuel economy while also reducingemissions. A vehicle designed with airflow in mind has also other benefits, such as less difficulty to accelerate.
Document US 2018/0031696 A1 discloses a sensor mounting arrangement foran autonomous or automated vehicle having an aerodynamic generally rounded or curved front perimeter surface.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of the present invention is to achieve an advantageous cover devicefor at least one sensor device, which facilitates the functionality of the at least one sensor device.
Another object of the present invention is to achieve an advantageous cover device for at least one sensor device, which reduces the aerodynamic drag.
The herein mentioned objects are achieved by:- a cover device for at least one sensor device arranged in an aperture in anouter panel of a vehicle,- a sensor arrangement for a vehicle comprising at least one sensor deviceand a cover device, and- a vehicle comprising at least one sensor device and a cover device, according to the appended claims.
Hence, according to an aspect of the present invention a cover device for atleast one sensor device arranged in an aperture in an outer panel of a vehicle isprovided. The cover device is configured to be arranged at a front corner sectionof the vehicle. The cover device comprises: a cover portion configured tosubstantially cover the aperture in the outer panel; and at least one guiding vane.
The at least one guiding vane may protrude essentially perpendicularly from thecover portion and may extend between a leading edge and a trailing edge alonga longitudinal extension of the cover portion, to guide ambient air past the apertu re.
According to another aspect of the invention, a sensor arrangement for a vehicleis provided. The sensor arrangement comprises: at least one sensor device, anda cover device as disclosed herein.
According to another aspect of the invention, a vehicle, comprising at least onesensor device arranged in an aperture in an outer panel of the vehicle, is provided. The vehicle comprises a cover device as disclosed herein. lt is desirable to strive for smooth surfaces at the front corners of the vehicle, inorder to maintain attached flow around the front corners of the vehicle. Thismeans that it is desirable that the flow of ambient air surrounding the vehicle inmovement is not separated from the vehicle body. lt may thus be undesirable,in an aerodynamic point of view, to attach for example sensors at the front corneras this may cause disturbances and lead to that separated flow and wakeregions emerge. However, depending on the application, there is sometimes aneed for a sensor device to be mounted at the front corners of the vehicle inorder to enable a desired sensing range. Positioning the sensor device at thefront corner of the vehicle may be beneficial since a large sensing angle/rangemay be achieved, covering the front and the sides of the vehicle as well asvehicle blind spots. Arranging the sensor device and thus the cover device at afront corner section of the vehicle according to the present disclosure may alsobe beneficial since the front corner section typically is an available unoccupiedspot in common for different types of vehicles. Thus, the cover device used andthe positioning of the at least one sensor may be similar for different types ofvehicles, which facilitates manufacturing, maintenance and mounting of the at least one sensor and the cover device.
By arranging the sensor device in an aperture in the outer panel of the vehicle, the at least one sensor device is arranged behind the outer panel. The sensordevice itself will thus not affect the aerodynamics. However, to protect the sensordevice a cover device is required. Since the cover device is configured tosubstantially cover the aperture in the outer panel, the streamlined overall shapeof the vehicle may be essentially intact. ln the case where a vehicle originallyhas been manufactured without an aperture, a cover device and at least onesensor device, an aperture may be provided at a later stage, followed byinstalling at least one sensor and a cover device. The aperture may be providedin the existing vehicle panel, or the concerned panel section of the vehicle maybe substituted to a panel section comprising an aperture. By using a coverdevice according to the present disclosure, the at least one sensor device isaccessible from the outside of the vehicle, which facilitates manufacturing andmaintenance and enables mounting of the at least one sensor and cover device after vehicle assembly.
By means of the least one protruding guiding vane extending between theleading edge and the trailing edge, the ambient air is guided by the cover devicepast the area of the aperture and the at least one sensor device. The at leastone guiding vane thus improves the airflow around the front corner section, compared to a flat cover device, and ensures that the airflow follows the vehiclecontours. Thereby, separation of flow around the front corner is reduced and theair drag is reduced. By reducing the air drag, the fuel economy of the vehicle increases and vehicle emissions is reduced.
Further benefits of the reduced separation of flow is a reduced risk for the sidesof the vehicle becoming soiled and dirty when driving. A separated flow mayhave the effect that dirt splashes up on the sides of the vehicle and e.g. soils thecab door and the door handle, which is undesirable especially for the driver whohas to open and close the door with the door handle. lt is also essential for thecover device to be sufficiently clean in order to ensure the functionality andaccuracy of the at least one sensor device. The at least one guiding vane may, by means of its protrusion, reduce the amount of water and/or dirt soiling thecover device. The maintenance related to cleaning of the cover device in orderto enable the functionality of the at least one sensor may therefore be reduced. Thus, the cover device comprising at least one guiding vane may increase thefunctionality of the at least one sensor.
The construction of the cover device is simple, robust and consists of few andunmovable parts, which is optimal for devices that are arranged on the outsideof vehicles, which may continuously be exposed to harsh conditions, such ashigh and low temperatures, debris, rain or snow.
Thus, by using a cover device according to the present disclosure, ambient airis guided past the aperture and the at least one sensor, while enabling thefunctionality of the at least one sensor device. Thus, a smooth airflow about thevehicle"s front corner section may be achieved, which in turn reducesaerodynamic drag and improves fuel efficiency.
Further objects, advantages and novel features of the present invention willbecome apparent to one skilled in the art from the following details, and also byputting the invention into practice. Whereas the invention is described below, itshould be noted that it is not restricted to the specific details described.Specialists having access to the teachings herein will recognise furtherapplications, modifications and incorporations within other fields, which arewithin the scope of the invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The cover device will be described in further detail below. lt is understood thatall the various examples of the cover device also applies for the sensorarrangement comprising such a cover device, and the vehicle comprising such a cover device.
According to an aspect of the present disclosure, a cover device for at least onesensor device arranged in an aperture in an outer panel of a vehicle is provided. The cover device is configured to be arranged at a front corner section of thevehicle. The cover device comprises: a cover portion configured to substantiallycover the aperture in the outer panel; and at least one guiding vane. The at leastone guiding vane protrudes essentially perpendicularly from the cover portionand extends between a leading edge and a trailing edge along a longitudinalextension of the cover portion, to guide ambient air past the aperture.
By means of the cover device the ambient air may be guided along the frontcorner section. The ambient air may be guided by the cover portion and the atleast one guiding vane past the front corner section and then essentially inparallel with the main travel direction of the vehicle, in order to attempt tomaintain attached flow. Thereby, separation of flow is reduced, which reduces drag losses.
The at least one sensor device being arranged in an aperture in the outer panelmeans that the at least one sensor device is arranged behind the outer panel,in association with the aperture. This may be explained as the at least onesensor being arranged behind an aperture in an outer panel of a vehicle.Typically, a sensor device itself comprises a housing or protective cover, whichis not to be confused with the cover device according to the disclosure. Thecover device may be defined as a cover device for an aperture in an outer panel of a vehicle.
The aperture in the outer panel of the vehicle enables access to the at least onesensor device for installation, maintenance etc. lf the at least one sensor devicewould be mounted on the inside of an intact vehicle panel, i.e. behind a vehicleouter panel without an aperture in front of the at least one sensor, difficultiesmay arise since the outer panel may be covered by paint and/or coatings which may disturb the functionality of the at least one sensor. For example, paint and coatings comprising different types of metal particles may negatively affect thetransmission of signals to and from the at least one sensor device.
The cover portion of the cover device may have an essentially rectangular shape.
The cover portion may have a rectangular shape with rounded corners. Thecover portion may have an essentially rectangular shape, with a longitudinalextension (length) and a width. The cover portion may have a width and lengthessentially corresponding to the aperture. The cover device may be configuredto be mounted on the vehicle with the longitudinal extension of the cover portionextending horizontally. The cover portion may comprise an upper edge, a loweredge, a front edge and a rear edge. The front edge may be the edge directedtowards the front of the vehicle and the rear edge may be directed towards therear of the vehicle. The cover portion may further comprise a back sideconfigured to face the at least one sensor device when the cover device ismounted in the aperture in the vehicle"s outer panel. The cover portion may alsocomprise a front side, opposite to the back side. The cover device may beconfigured to be arranged, so that the front side is exposed to ambient airflow. Thus, the cover portion may extend longitudinally between the front edge andthe rear edge, and the width of the cover portion may extend between the upperedge and the lower edge. According to examples, the length of the cover portionmay be between 50 - 400 mm (millimetres), or between 100 - 300 mm, orbetween 150 - 250 mm. According to examples, the width of the cover portionmay be between 15 - 300 mm, or between 25 - 200 mm, or between 50 - 150 mm.
The cover portion is configured to substantially cover the aperture in the outerpanel in order to protect the at least one sensor device, to impede air flowinginto the aperture and reduce disturbances of the airflow. The cover portion maycomprise a cover plate. The cover portion may be arched-shaped. The coverportion may be curved from the front edge to the rear edge. The cover portionmay have a convex curvature from the front edge to the rear edge. The coverportion may be at least partly curved to follow the shape of the outer panel surrounding the aperture in the outer panel of the front corner section. By meansof the cover portion essentially covering the aperture and at least partly followingthe shape of the surrounding outer panel, improved airflow over the apertureand the front corner may be achieved.
The cover portion may have a shape adapted to the at least one sensor device. This means that at least a part of the cover portion may have a certain angle orcurvature in order to ensure proper functionality of the at least one sensor. Theangle or curvature required by the at least one sensor may not coincide with thecurvature of the outer panel of the vehicle and may not be optimal in anaerodynamic point of view. However, by means of the at least one guiding vanes, the airflow over the aperture and the at least one sensor is improved, whileenabling the functionality of the at least one sensor device.
The at least one guiding vane may have a curvature corresponding to thecurvature of the cover portion. The at least one guiding vane may extendlongitudinally between the leading edge and the trailing edge along thelongitudinal extension of the cover portion. The at least one guiding vane mayhave a width and a thickness. The width corresponds to the distance that the atleast one guiding vane protrudes from the cover portion. The width may also bedefined as the depth of the at least one guiding vane. According to examples, the width of the at least one guiding vane may be between 1 - 30 mm, or between2 - 25 mm, or between 3 - 20 mm. According to examples, the thickness of theat least one guiding vane may be between 1 - 30 mm, or between 3 - 20 mm, orbetween 5 - 15 mm. ln the case of more than one guiding vanes, the differentguiding vanes may not have similar width or thickness. The length, width andthickness of the at least one guiding vane may be optimized and tailored for the present application.
The cover device may be designed and adapted to various types of vehicles;such as truck, buses or cars. The cover device disclosed herein may be applicable for different sensor devices. However, the at least one sensor device may specifically relate to vicinity information detection Sensors. The at least onesensor device may be configured as a conventional vicinity information detectionsensor and may thus comprise a detection unit, such as a laser, radar, anultrasound sensor or an optical camera, for detecting objects in the vicinity ofthe vehicle. The at least one sensor device may further comprise a housingenclosing the detection unit. lt is thus to be understood that the cover deviceaccording to the present disclosure differ from the housing of an individualsensor. The at least one sensor device may be arranged in communication with a control device according to conventional vehicle sensors.
According to an example, the at least one guiding vane is arranged along theupper edge of the cover portion. Thus, an upper guiding vane may be arrangedalong the upper edge of the cover portion. According to an example, the at leastone guiding vane is arranged along the lower edge of the cover portion. Thus, alower guiding vane may be arranged along the lower edge of the cover portion.According to an example, the at least one guiding vane is arranged between theupper edge and the lower edge of the cover portion. Thus, an intermediateguiding vane may be arranged between the upper edge and the lower edge of the cover portion.
By means of at least one guiding vane arranged along the upper edge of thecover portion, or along the lower edge of the cover portion or between the upperedge and the lower edge of the cover portion, ambient air is guided from thefront edge to the rear edge of the cover portion. Thereby, the aerodynamic drag may be reduced.
According to an example, the cover device may comprises two guiding vanes. The two guiding vanes may be arranged in parallel with each other. l\/lultipleparallel guiding vanes may improve the airflow around the front corner section.According to an example, the cover device may comprise two guiding vanes, whereby at least one air channel is formed between the two guiding vanes. Thus, the air channel may be defined between an upper guiding vane arranged along 11 the upper edge of the cover portion; and a lower guiding vane arranged alongthe lower edge of the cover portion; and the front side of the cover portion. Thismeans that the air channel may not be encircled by walls at all sides. Thus, theair channel may be open in a direction perpendicular to the front side of the coverportion. The air channel may also be referred to as air groove. ln an example, the at least one air channel may comprise an air inlet at the front edge and anair outlet at the rear edge of the cover portion. The air inlet and the air outletmay also be referred to as air inlet passage and air outlet passage. The ambientair may enter the air channel at the air inlet and exit the air channel at the airoutlet. The air inlet may be formed between the leading edges of the two guidingvanes and the air outlet may be formed between the trailing edges of the two guiding vanes.
By means of the two guiding vanes, which may form an air channel, the ambientair is efficiently guided from the front edge to the rear edge of the cover portion, with reduced risk of disturbances in the ambient airflow since the airflow path isboth guided and shielded by the guiding vanes. The ambient air entering intothe air channel at the front edge of the cover portion is thus directed past theaperture and the at least one sensor device. A flow of ambient air parallel to theguiding vanes is thus achieved and separation of flow is significantly reduced. The direction of the airflow is thus straightened by means of the guiding vanesand the aerodynamic drag is reduced. A configuration with two protrudingguiding vanes may actually result in lower aerodynamic drag than an intact outer panel, i.e. a panel without aperture, cover device etc. ln an example, the cover device comprises three guiding vanes. Depending onthe width of the cover portion, multiple guiding vanes may be beneficial in orderto reduce the aerodynamic drag.
According to an example, the protrusion of the at least one guiding vaneincreases from the leading edge to the trailing edge. The at least one guidingvane may thus be configured so that the width of the at least one guiding vane 12 increases from the leading edge to the trailing edge. This way, the at least oneguiding vane protrudes further from the cover portion at the trailing edge than at the leading edge.
By this configuration, an effective guiding of ambient air may be achieved, inorder to reduce the aerodynamic drag. ln the case of more than one guidingvane, the different guiding vanes may not have similar width or increase in sizefrom the leading edge to the trailing edge. The width and increase in size maybe optimized and tailored for the present application.
The cover device may be aerodynamically shaped. According to an example, the at least one guiding vane may have a rounded and/or tapered shape.According to an example, the at least one guiding vane is rounded and/ortapered at the leading edge and/or the trailing edge. ln an example, the at leastone guiding vane may have a rounded and/or tapered shape at the leading edge, the trailing edge and along the longitudinal extension of the at least one guidevane. A rounded and/or tapered shape may reduce aerodynamic drag. Arounded shape may also reduce the risk of punctures, cuts or other physicalinjury to vulnerable road user. There may also be legal requirements that haveto be fulfilled regarding protruding parts at external surfaces of a vehicle, forexample that such parts shall not have any sharp edges. A rounded shape ofthe at least one guiding vane may also increase the impact resistance of the atleast on guiding vane. According to an example, the at least one guiding vanemay have an elliptic cross sectional shape along the longitudinal extension ofthe at least one guiding vane. ln an example, the at least one guiding vane mayhave an elliptic cross sectional shape in the transversal plane, perpendicularlyto the longitudinal extension of the at least one guiding vane. The elliptic shape may be favourable in an aerodynamic point of view.
According to an example, the at least one guiding vane may be integrated withthe cover portion. Thus, the construction of the cover device may be simple, robust and may consist of only one single unit, which is optimal for devices that 13 are arranged on the outside of a vehicle. Also, since the at least one guidingvane and cover portion may be integrated, the risk of e.g. air gaps between theat least one air guiding vane and the cover portion which may affect theaerodynamic characteristics negatively may be excluded. According to anexample, the cover device is moulded as a single piece or manufactured as asingle piece by additive manufacturing. When cover device is manufactured asa single piece, or a single unit, there is no need to manufacture and mountdifferent pieces together. Thus, the risk of misalignment or that different partsdo not match is excluded. lt may thus be ensured that e.g. the curvature of theat least one guiding vane exactly corresponds to the curvature of the coverportion. ln this way, the desired aerodynamic characteristics of the cover devicemay be obtained in a cost- and time effective manner.
According to an example, the cover portion comprises a frame section extendingalong the front edge, the rear edge, the upper edge and the lower edge of thecover portion. The frame section may protrude in relation to the rest of the coverportion. The frame section surrounds an area of the cover portion referred to asa cover window. The cover window may be the area of the cover portion throughwhich signals to and from the at least one sensor device is transmitted and/orreceived. The cover window may be less curved than the frame section. ln anexample, the cover window may be an essentially flat area of the cover portion.A cover portion comprising a cover window surrounded by a frame section maybe applicable for certain types of sensors, e.g. radar sensors. ln the case wherethe at least one sensor device comprises a radar sensor, a certain angle of thecover window may be required in order to ensure proper functionality of thesensor. The angle required by the radar sensor may not coincide with thecurvature of the outer panel of the vehicle or the frame section of the coverdevice. For a radar sensor covered by a cover portion with an incorrect angle orcurvature, reflexes in the signals may arise which will lead to detection errors. The frame section surrounding the cover window bridges the differencesbetween the curvature of the outer panel and the cover window. However, for other types of sensors, the curvature or angle of the cover portion may not be 14 an issue. According to an example, the frame section is configured to be flushwith the outer panel. ln an example, the frame section is configured to overlap the outer panel around the aperture.
According to an example, the cover portion may be configured to be at leastpartly inserted into the aperture. According to an example, the cover portion isconfigured to be arranged flush with the outer panel. By means of the coverportion being at least partly inserted into the aperture, and/or flush with the outerpanel, the aerodynamic drag may be reduced.
According to an example, the cover portion is smaller than the aperture, so thatthere is a gap between the cover portion and the aperture when the cover deviceis arranged at the vehicle. ln an example, the gap is between 0,1 mm to 5 mm.Due to the gap between the cover portion and the aperture, the manufacturingrequirements with regard to manufacturing and mounting tolerances arereduced. The gap also enables movements between the cover portion and theouter panel of the vehicle, which may reduce the risk of the cover device and/orthe at least one sensor device being damaged in the case of impact on the surrounding outer panel of the vehicle.
According to an example, the cover device may be configured to be releasablyattached to at least one mounting support and/or the at least one sensor device. The at least one mounting support may be arranged in/behind the aperture inthe outer panel. By attaching the cover device to at least one mounting supportand/or the at least one sensor device, the cover device does not have to beattached to the outer panel of the vehicle. This way, the risk of damaging thecover device is reduced. Furthermore, attaching the cover device to the outerpanel of the vehicle may negatively affect the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
According to an example, the cover device may be configured to be arranged in association with a bumper corner, a chassis corner or a cab corner of the vehicle.
According to an example, the cover portion is transmissive to signals transmittedand/or received by the at least one sensor device. According to an example, thecover window is transmissive to signals transmitted and/or received by the atleast one sensor device. Thus, the cover portion and/or cover window maycomprise a material transmissive to e.g. radar, sound or light, such as visible, infrared, laser or others, depending on the type of sensor intended to be used. The cover device may comprise a plastic material. The cover device may forexample comprise composite plastics. The plastic may be covered with lacquerand/or paint. However, the materials and coatings of the cover device may be chosen in order to not affect the functionality of the at least one sensor negatively.
According to an example, the at least one guiding vane may comprise a flexibleor resilient material. A flexible or resilient material may be beneficial since therisk of e.g. damaging the cover device at impact may decrease, while alsoreducing the risk of the cover device harming humans, such as vulnerable road USGI' etC.

The at least one guiding vane14, 14a, 14bmay protrude essentially perpendicularly from the cover portion 12 and extendbetween a leading edge 24 and a trailing edge 26 along a longitudinal extensionof the cover portion 12, to guide ambient air past the aperture 2. A flow ofambient air (illustrated with an A in Figures 2 and 3) parallel to the at least oneguiding vanes 14, 14a, 14b is thus achieved and separation of flow issignificantly reduced. By using a cover device 10 at the aperture 2, theaerodynamic drag is decreased, while facilitating the functionality of the at leastone sensor device 20.
The cover portion 12 is configured to substantially cover the aperture 2 in theouter panel 4 in order to protect the at least one sensor device 20, to impede airflowing into the aperture 2 and reduce disturbances of the airflow. The coverportion 12 may be transmissive to signals transmitted and/or received by the atleast one sensor device 20. The cover portion 12 of the cover device 10 mayhave a rectangular shape with rounded corners. The cover portion may 18 comprise an upper edge 17, a lower edge 18, a front edge 15 and a rear edge16.
