Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a fuel injector (11) for supplying fuel into a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine (2), wherein the fuel injector comprises:- a nozzle (13) comprising nozzle openings (23) and a seat portion (25) adjacent to the nozzle openings;- a needle (17) arranged within the nozzle, wherein the needle is arranged to be slidably movable between a first position wherein a tip end (31) of the needle abuts the seat portion of the nozzle and a second position wherein the tip end of the needle is retracted from the seat portion; and- a control chamber (33) arranged at a second end (35) of the needle opposite the tip end of the needle, the control chamber comprising a control cavity (39), a cavity inlet (41) and a cavity outlet, wherein the control chamber is arranged to control movement of the needle between the first position and the second position by controlling a fuel flow out of the control cavity through the cavity outlet relative to a fuel flow into the control chamber through the cavity inlet;wherein the cavity outlet comprises an outlet channel (43) arranged adjacent to the control cavity and longitudinally substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the needle, wherein the outlet channel is arranged in fluid connection with the control cavity via an outlet interfacial area (A) between the outlet channel and the control cavity, and wherein the outlet interfacial area is arranged to be successively blocked by the needle upon movement of the needle from the first position to the second position.
