Abstract

The disclosure relates to a method for a battery charger configured to prevent damage to a battery being charged, the method comprising controlling a power source to cyclically generate a current pulse within a cycle period to terminals of the battery, obtaining a first plurality of successive voltage values indicative of a voltage over the terminals of the battery within a charging period of the cycle period, determining a first voltage trend, based on the first plurality of successive voltage values, determining that a battery cell of the battery is faulty based one the first voltage trend and a set of predefined voltage profiles, and if it is determined that the battery cell is faulty, controlling the power source to stop the cyclic generation of subsequent current pulses.
