12 ABSTRACT The invention concerns a pier block anchor element (20) for adjustable anc-horing an upright threaded rod in a top hole of a pier block. The anchor ele-ment (20) comprises a first plastic sleeve (21 ), arranged to be inserted deeplyin said top hole, and a second plastic sleeve (22), arranged to be insertedshallowly in said top hole on top of and in line with the first sleeve (21 ). Thefirst sleeve (21) has an internally threaded bore (23), that is arranged tothreadingly interact with said threaded rod, and the second sleeve (22) has acentral bore (24), that is arranged to let said threaded rod pass freely. Thesecond sleeve (22) has a top end face (25), surrounding its bore (2) and ar-ranged to abut from below against a nut device, that is screwed on saidthreaded rod in order to bear against a top surface of the pier block. A toppart of the first sleeve (21) and a bottom part of the second sleeve (22) forman expansion collar (26), that is expandable against a surrounding wall of saidtop hole by lengthwise compressing the anchor element (20) by tighteningsaid nut device, which leads to the first sleeve (21), that is threadingly engag-ing said threaded rod, being drawn towards the second sleeve (22), that hasits top end face (25) abutting against said nut device, and thus the expansioncollar (26) to expand. Prior Art Document US 5 561 950 shows an adjustable pier block including abase portion. A threaded rod is held therein against rotation and axial move-ment. A coupling having internal threads that match those of the rod isthreaded onto the rod. By means of a connector the coupling bears a bracket,which in turn bears a constructional element, such as a wood beam. By dis-placing the coupling on the rod the height of the bracket in relation to saidbase portion is adjustable. ln document US 5 561 950 the threaded rod is shown to be held by be- ing embedded in cast concrete. A solution of that kind has several drawbacks.
One is that a threaded rod has to the placed and secured in every castingmould before casting, which renders large scale production difficult. Anotheris that storing and transport of pier blocks with protruding rods out of obviousreasons is rendered difficult too. And a further one is that height adjustmentdownwards is limited by the given length of the protruding threaded rod.Against that background adjustable pier blocks without an embeddedthreaded rod clearly would have to be considered to be advantageous.Document US 4 404 780 shows a pier block including a base portion,that has a central hole in its top. lnserted in said hole is a threaded rod, thathas a bracket for a constructional element on top. The threaded rod is adjust-able in height in relation to the base portion by means of a nut, which isscrewed on the threaded rod and bears on the top of the base portion.
Document US 4 404 780 does not indicate if and if so how thethreaded rod is connected to the base portion. lf it is connected and not justloosely inserted, it has to be in some kind of displaceable way, likely bymeans of the threads of the threaded rod as these threads are there anywayfor said nut. ln order to connect a threaded rod in a displaceable way in a hole in apiece of solid material, such as a pier block of concrete, it is known to usedifferent kinds of anchor elements with internal threads for said rod. Roughlythese anchor elements can be divided into two different kinds: those that areattached by means of external threads cutting into a circumferential wall ofsaid hole, and those that are attached by being expanded through interactionwith a threaded rod journalled in the anchor element.
An anchor element of the first kind is revealed in EP 1 536 149 A2. lnorder to enable its external threads to cut at all into a solid material, such asconcrete, obviously such an anchor element has to be made of a hard ma-terial, such as hardened steel. This increases the production costs of theanchor element. Further, setting of the anchor element, which has to be donemanually, is laborious due to high forces needed, and replacing thereof ifdamaged is almost impossible, because the hard material renders reboringdifficult. Finally, in practice it has shown that threaded rods of pier blocks,which are usually made of galvanized iron, and anchor elements of hardenedsteel are prone to corrosion due to galvanic interaction.
An anchor element of the second kind is revealed in US 2002/0054805A1. The anchor element shown in that document comprises two sleeves, oneof which is to be inserted deeply in a hole, and one of which is to be insertedshallowly in said hole outside of and in line with the first sleeve. The firstsleeve has a circumferential outwardly facing top wedge portion, fitting aninwardly facing bottom wedge portion of the second sleeve. The bottomwedge portion is by slits divided into several segments, that can be expandedoutvvardly by tightening of a bolt and nut arrangement drawing the sleevestogether.
Although one of the objects of the anchor element according to US2002/0054805 is said to be economic production, the anchor element ob- viously is made of metal, which is detrimental from a production cost point ofview. Further, as indicated above, metal anchor elements used in top holes ofpier blocks are prone to corrode rapidly and raises questions, too, about long-time adjustability.
Obiect of the lnvention The prior art solutions described above show that there is need of animproved anchor element for pier blocks, wherein said anchor element has tobe cheap to manufacture, easy to set and replace and corrosion resistant,and has to provide reliable longtime adjustability. And the prior art solutionsshow as well that there is need for an improved pier block especially from anadjustability point of view.
Summarv of the lnventionAccording to a first aspect of the present invention an improved anchor element for adjustable anchoring an upright threaded rod in a top hole of apier block is accomplished by the anchor element comprising a first plasticsleeve, arranged to be inserted deeply in said top hole, and a second plasticsleeve, arranged to be inserted shallowly in said top hole on top of and in linewith the first sleeve, wherein the first sleeve has an internally threaded bore,that is arranged to threadingly interact with said threaded rod, and the secondsleeve has a central bore, that is arranged to let said threaded rod pass free-ly, wherein the second sleeve has a top end face, surrounding its bore andarranged to abut from below against a nut device, that is screwed on saidthreaded rod in order to bear against a top surface of the pier block, andwherein a top part of the first sleeve and a bottom part of the second sleeveform an expansion collar, that is expandable against a surrounding wall ofsaid top hole by lengthwise compressing the anchor element by tighteningsaid nut device, which leads to the first sleeve, that is threadingly engagingsaid threaded rod, being drawn towards the second sleeve, that has its topend face abutting against said nut device, and thus the expansion collar toexpand. The person skilled in the art realizes that such an anchor elementcan be cheap to manufacture, easy to set and replace and corrosion resis- tant, since it is made of plastic. And further that its design does provide ex-tensive and reliable adjustability.
According to a first embodiment the expansion collar of the anchorelement is formed by a circumferential outwardly facing top wedge portion ofthe first sleeve and a fitting inwardly facing bottom wedge portion of thesecond sleeve. A solution like that is very easy to accomplish, e.g. by turningthe sleeves in a lathe.
Preferably, said wedge portions, and hence said sleeves, initially areinterconnected by means of break-off web means. A solution of that kind isadvantageous, because it simplifies handling of the anchor element.
Preferably, in the anchor element according to the first embodiment atleast the second sleeve has an outer diameter fitting said top hole with a tightfit, such that the anchor element, when inserted into said top hole, is safelykept therein even before interaction with said threaded rod and said nut de-vice. This solution does also simplify handling of the anchor element.
According to a second, preferred embodiment of the invention the ex-pansion collar of the anchor element is formed by a bellow means intercon-necting the first and second sleeves. According to this embodiment bothsleeves always form an advantageous unit.
Preferably, said bellow means comprises a single circumferentialgroove on the inside of the anchor element, whereas the outside thereof is allsmooth at the groove location. A solution like that is easy to accomplish anddurable too.
Preferably, the first sleeve of the preferred embodiment of the anchorelement on its outside has longitudinally extending beads, arranged to inte-ract with said surrounding wall of the top hole in order to safely keep the anc-hor element inside said hole after insertion therein and to counteract rotationof the anchor element when said threaded rod is rotated in relation thereto.Again, this is a solution that does simplify handling of the anchor element.
Preferably, the preferred embodiment of the anchor element comprisesa third sleeve identical to the second sleeve on the opposite side of the firstsleeve, such that the insertion direction of the anchor element becomes un- important. This solution, too, does simplify handling of the anchor elementand is fail safe as well.
Preferably, the anchor element according to the preferred embodimentis composed of two identical interconnected parts, that are mirror-invertedalong a longitudinal parting plane, wherein said two identical parts preferablyare injection-moulded parts. From a production point of view, this is very at-tractive.
Preferably, the anchor element according to the invention has a totallength before lengthwise compression corresponding to the depth of a firstwide part of said top hole. This solution does also simplify handling of theanchor element in a fail safe way.
According to a second aspect of the invention an improved pier block isaccomplished especially for use with an anchor element according to the in-vention, said pier block being characterized in that it comprises a stepped tophole having a first wide part for said anchor element and a second narrowerpart enabling unimpeded insertion of said threaded rod, such that an adjust-ment range of said threaded rod in relation to the pier block is extended. Byproviding a hole prolonged in that way, the adjustability range of the threadedrod is extended in a downward direction. Thus, in most cases a threaded rodof a standard length will do irrespective of the situation at hand.

Description of the Preferred Embodiments ln the following two preferred embodiments of the anchor element ac-cording to the present invention are described in detail with reference to thedrawings. ln fig. 1 a pier block 1 is shown. Pier blocks 1 are usually made of con-crete and can have various forms. However, typical for them is that they areto carry loads, such as wooden beams (not shown), by means of threadedrods 6. These can be connected to said loads by means of stirrups or the like(not shown) and to the pier blocks 1 by means of anchor elements inserted intop holes 2 of the pier blocks 1. Preferably these anchor elements do not car-ry any substantial loads. This is instead done by nut devices 7, 8, that arescrewed on the threaded rods 6 and bear against top surfaces 3 of the pierblocks 1. As can be seen in fig. 1, in this context the expression nut device 7,8 is meant to comprise both nuts 7 and washers 8, since these sometimescan be assembled into or made of one piece or even comprise just a nut 7. ln figs. 2 and 3 a first embodiment of an anchor element 10 accordingto the invention is shown. lt comprises a first plastic sleeve 11, that is ar-ranged to be inserted deeply in a top hole 2 of a pier block 1, and a secondplastic sleeve 12, that is arranged to be inserted shallowly in said top hole 2on top of and in line with the first sleeve 11. The first sleeve 11 has an inter-nally threaded bore 13, that is arranged to threadingly, and hence adjustable,interact with a threaded rod 6, whereas the second sleeve 12 has a centralbore 14, that is arranged to let said threaded rod 6 pass freely.
The second sleeve 12 has a top end face 15, that surrounds its bore14 and is arranged to abut from below against a nut device 7, 8 according tothe above. A top part of the first sleeve 11 and a bottom part of the secondsleeve 12 form an expansion collar 16, that is expandable against a surround-ing wall of said top hole 2 by lengthwise compressing the anchor element 10by tightening said nut device 7, 8, which leads to the first sleeve 11, that isthreadingly engaging said threaded rod 6, being drawn towards the second sleeve 12, that has its top end face 15 abutting against said nut device 7, 8,and thus the expansion collar 16 to expand.
According to the first embodiment the expansion collar 16 is formed bya circumferential outwardly facing top wedge portion 17 of the first sleeve 11and a fitting inwardly facing bottom wedge portion 18 of the second sleeve 12.These wedge portions 17, 18, and hence said sleeves 11, 12, are preferablyinitially interconnected by means of break-off web means, such as thin plasticbridges being broken when the wedge portions 17, 18 move towards eachother.
Preferably, in this embodiment at least the second sleeve 12 has anouter diameter fitting said top hole 2 with a tight fit, such that the anchor ele-ment 10, when inserted in said top hole 2, is safely kept therein even beforeinteraction with said threaded rod 6 and said nut device 7, 8. ln this way pierblocks 1 with premounted anchor bolts 10 can be stored and transported un-impeded of protruding threaded rods or the like. ln figs. 4-6 a second embodiment of an anchor element 20 accordingto the invention is shown. lt comprises a first plastic sleeve 21, that is ar-ranged to be inserted deeply in a top hole 2 of a pier block 1, and a secondplastic sleeve 22, that made in one piece with the first sleeve 21 and arrangedto be inserted shallowly in said top hole 2. Again, the first sleeve 21 has aninternally threaded bore 23, that is arranged to threadingly, and hence adjust-able, interact with a threaded rod 6, whereas the second sleeve 22 has a cen-tral bore 24, that is arranged to let said threaded rod 6 pass freely.
The second sleeve 22 has a top end face 25, that surrounds its bore24 and is arranged to abut from below against a nut device 7, 8 according tothe above. A top part of the first sleeve 21 and a bottom part of the secondsleeve 22 form an expansion collar 26, that is expandable against a surround-ing wall of said top hole 2 by lengthwise compressing the anchor element 20by tightening said nut device 7, 8, exactly as described before in connectionwith the first embodiment, and thus the expansion collar 26 to expand.
According to the second embodiment said expansion collar 26 isformed by a bellow means 27 interconnecting the first 21 and second 22sleeves. To be more precise, the bellow means 27 comprises a single circum- ferential groove 28 with a concave section on the inside of the anchor ele-ment 20, whereas the outside of the anchor element 20 is all smooth at thegroove location.
As can be seen, the first sleeve 21 has on its outside longitudinally ex-tending beads 29. These are arranged to interact with a surrounding wall ofthe top hole 2 of a pier block 1 in order to safely keep the anchor element 20inside said hole 2 after insertion therein and to counteract rotation of the anc-hor element 20 when a threaded rod 6 is inserted therein and rotated in rela-tion thereto.
According to a preferred embodiment and as shown, the anchor ele-ment 20 comprises a third sleeve 30 identical to the second sleeve 22 on theopposite side of the first sleeve 21, such that the insertion direction of theanchor element 20 becomes unimportant. Further, according to said preferredembodiment the anchor element 20 is composed of two identical intercon-nected parts 31, that are mirror-inverted along a longitudinal parting plane P.By this it is rendered possible to injection-mould the anchor element 20, whichis advantageous in many ways.
Finally some remarks concerning the pier block 1 shown in fig. 1. ltdiffers from many traditional peer blocks in that it can be stored and trans-ported without any protruding treaded rods 6 or the like and in that it providesfor better adjustability. To that purpose it has a central top hole 2, that is ar-ranged to optimally fit an anchor element 10; 20 according to the invention.Hence, said top hole 2 is stepped, having a first wide part 4 fitting said anchorelement (length and diameter), thus keeping the anchor element 10; 20 inplace even without being expanded, and a second narrower part 5 enablingunimpeded insertion ofa threaded rod 6, thus increasing an adjustment rangeof the threaded rod 6 in relation to the pier block 1.

Claims (12)

1. _ A pier block anchor element (10; 20) for adjustable anchoring an uprightthreaded rod (6) in a top hole (2) of a pier block (1), c h a r a c t e r i z e d inthat it comprises a first plastic sleeve (11; 21), arranged to be inserted deeplyin said top hole (2), and a second plastic sleeve (12; 22), arranged to be in-serted shallowly in said top hole (2) on top of and in line with the first sleeve(1 1; 21), wherein the first sleeve (11; 21) has an internally threaded bore (13;23), that is arranged to threadingly interact with said threaded rod (6), and thesecond sleeve (12; 22) has a central bore (14; 24), that is arranged to let saidthreaded rod (6) pass freely, wherein the second sleeve (12; 22) has a topend face (15; 25), surrounding its bore (14; 24) and arranged to abut frombelow against a nut device (7, 8), that is screwed on said threaded rod (6) inorder to bear against a top surface (3) of the pier block (1 ), and wherein a toppart of the first sleeve (1 1; 21) and a bottom part of the second sleeve (12;22) form an expansion collar (16; 26), that is expandable against a surround-ing wall of said top hole (2) by lengthwise compressing the anchor element(10; 20) by tightening said nut device (7, 8), which leads to the first sleeve(11; 21), that is threadingly engaging said threaded rod (6), being drawn to-wards the second sleeve (12; 22), that has its top end face (15; 25) abuttingagainst said nut device (7, 8), and thus the expansion collar (16; 26) to ex-pand.
2. The anchor element (10) according to claim 1, wherein the expansion collar(16) is formed by a circumferential outwardly facing top wedge portion (17) ofthe first sleeve (11) and a fitting inwardly facing bottom wedge portion (18) ofthe second sleeve (12).
3. The anchor element (10) according to claim 2, wherein said wedge portions(17, 18), and hence said sleeves (11, 12), initially are interconnected bymeans of break-off web means.
4. The anchor element (10) according to claim 2 or 3, wherein at least thesecond sleeve (12) has an outer diameter fitting said top hole (2) with a tightfit, such that the anchor element (10), when inserted in said top hole (2), issafely kept therein even before interaction with said threaded rod (6) and saidnut device (7, 8).
5. The anchor element (20) according to claim 1, wherein the expansion collar(26) is formed by a bellow means (27) interconnecting the first (21) andsecond (22) sleeves.
6. The anchor element (20) according to claim 5, wherein said bellow means(27) comprises a single circumferential groove (28) on the inside of the anc-hor element (20), whereas the outside thereof is all smooth at the groove por-tion.
7. The anchor element (20) according to claim 5 or 6, wherein the first sleeve(21) on its outside has longitudinally extending beads (29), arranged to inte-ract with said surrounding wall of the top hole (2) in order to safely keep theanchor element (20) inside said hole after insertion therein and to counteractrotation of the anchor element (20) when said threaded rod (6) is rotated inrelation thereto.
8. The anchor element (20) according to any one of claims 5-7, comprising athird sleeve (30) identical to the second sleeve (22) on the opposite side ofthe first sleeve (21 ), such that the insertion direction of the anchor element(20) becomes unimportant.
9. The anchor element (20) according to any one of claims 5-8, being com-posed of two identical interconnected parts (31), mirror-inverted along a longi-tudinal parting plane (P).
10. The anchor element (20) according to claim 9, wherein the two identicalparts (31) are injection-moulded parts. 11
11. The anchor element (10; 20) according to any preceding claim, having atotal length before Iengthwise compression corresponding to the depth of afirst wide part (4) of said top hole (2).
12. A pier block (1 ) for use with an anchor element (10; 20) according to anypreceding claim, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that it comprises a stepped tophole (2) having a first wide part (4) for said anchor element and a second nar-rower part (5) enabling unimpeded insertion of said threaded rod (6), suchthat an adjustment range of said threaded rod (6) in relation to the pier block(1) is extended.
