Abstract

A distance measuring unit (1) uses a narrow beam of light (2) to carry out frequent distance measurements, an orienting unit moves the measuring unit along a line or curve so that it makes sweeps covering the area in the front of the vehicle (7). This area is a narrow one which does not extend appreciably beyond the vehicle in its width direction but which extends considerably in the vehicle length direction. The device includes a means for continuously measuring beam angle, a means for continuously determining the change in vehicle position in both the translational and rotational directions and a means for measuring the topography in front of the vehicle based on this data.
