Abstract

Coating a surface or attaching two surfaces to each other involves use of a composition comprising an acidic aqueous solution of a bioadhesive polyphenolic protein derived from a byssus-forming mussel. Coating a surface or attaching two surfaces to each other involves use of a composition comprising an acidic aqueous solution of a bioadhesive polyphenolic protein derived from a byssus-forming mussel. The protein contains 30-300 amino acids and is formed of tandemly linked peptide repeats containing 3-15 amino acid residues. At least 3 (preferably 6-30) % of the amino acid residues of the protein are L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine. The pH of the acidic solution is at most 4 (preferably at most 3, especially at most 2.5).
