Abstract

The apparatus for measuring the cross profile of a road surface incorporates a laser unit (1,1) carried by a vehicle (10). The laser vertically illuminates the road surface and a vehicle-borne sensor (3) monitors the distance to the illuminated road surface (4). The laser unit illuminates the road surface along a line (11) extending crossways to the vehicle and the road surface, the light being directed in a vertical plane. A reference line extending horizontally is borne by the vehicle. The sensor incorporates an electronic camera fitted on the vehicle at a distance (t) longitudinally from the laser light plane and simultaneously observing both the laser line projected on the road surface and the reference line. A recording unit (8) records the angle monitored by the camera between the projected laser line and the reference line at a number of positions along the projected laser line. The reference line is an illuminated reflecting structure on a reference component (2) supported by the vehicle.
