A synchronous machine, particularly a motor or a generator, and particularly a motor or a generator, and more particularly an hydropower generator, comprising a stator (1) and a rotor (2), wherein the rotor has salient poles (21, 22) which are directed towards the stator (1) and each of which includes a pole body with a surrounding excitation winding (23, 23') and having an associated permanent magnet set (4, 4') which is placed in a space within the pole body.
