Abstract

Load calculation system for a freight vehicle comprising a tractor unit 4 and a semitrailer 10 connected to the latter via a fifth-wheel coupling 6. The tractor unit has a front axle 16 and a rear axle 20 fitted to its loadbearing frame 8 by means of various kinds of suspension systems. The suspension system of the rear axle comprises pneumatic springs 24 such as air bellows. The system incorporates sensors 26 which are arranged adjacent to the pneumatic springs in the suspension system of the rear axle and are intended to determine the weight bearing upon the rear axle. On board the tractor unit there is a computer 28 in which it is possible to save: information about the tractor vehicle's wheelbase B, data concerning the position of the point of application 6 of the load deriving from the semitrailer 10 which acts upon the tractor unit 4, and data concerning the weight bearing upon the rear axle 20 when the vehicle is laden and unladen respectively. The computer 28 incorporates a calculation unit 30 for calculating the weight bearing upon the front axle 16 when the vehicle is laden. The front axle suspension system of the freight vehicle is of the leaf spring type and has not detector of its own for determining the weight on the front axle.
