Abstract

A mixture (20) of the separated soap and some of the filtrate from the filtrate vessel (14) is altered to a temperature of 10-80 deg.C before separating the soap from this mixture, and then the remaining filtrate is returned to the filtrate vessel. A method for improving an alkali pulping process comprises supplying some of the filtrate (12) from the pulp washing step (8) to a filtrate vessel, where soap is separated from the filtrate before the latter is returned to the pulping process (2, 4). A mixture of the separated soap and some of the filtrate from the filtrate vessel is altered to a temperature of 10-80 deg.C before separating the soap from this mixture, and then the remaining filtrate is returned to the filtrate vessel. An Independent claim is also included for the apparatus used, which includes a heat exchanger (18) between the filtrate vessel and a vessel (22) for the soap/filtrate mixture, which is used to control the temperature of the mixture.
